Really going downhill

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Minneapolis, MN

I worked at Target full-time for more than 5 years

ProsOK benefits, corporate perks (free music concerts, etc), employee discount, decent salary for HQ positions, convenient to bus lines and other transportation

Consnot family friendly, high expectations of employees, benefits could be greater, horrid corporate culture, until recently, required business dress even when it wasn't appropriate, VERY difficult to get promoted

Advice to Senior ManagementStart valuing people who actually do something other than marketing or merchandising. It's important that you have

I have been working at Target full-time for more than 3 years

ProsTarget does a good job hiring people who are generally helpful and self motivated. The people I work with are a great bunch of people. There is a 10% discount on items with a couple of employee appreciation weeks throughout the year for a little more of a discount. Once a month or so, they provide food for employees as recognition of Target making buckets of money. Benefits are not bad and the company does a fairly good job of verbally recognizing its employees.

ConsThey do a great job VERBALLY recognizing employees and not such a great job motivating employees to work as hard as they expect you to work. They expect $15/hr. work out of someone they pay just over minimum wage. The economy is not great, so we work just that hard and still get paid very little. The management are being negatively motivated to make the employees sell more Redcards, more attachments, more Cartwheel signups, and more items in each basket. Interesting story: the watch they gave me for my three year anniversary broke the very next day. THE VERY NEXT DAY. I'm just saying that Target does not give anything to their employees that they don't have to for some reason.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind new ways to motivate like through stock options or bonuses. Try to give everyone more hours and not hire more people than you need.

Unfulfilling

Flow Team Member (Former Employee)

I worked at Target part-time for more than 5 years

ProsPhysical activity and working as a team.

ConsPre-dawn shifts, very laborious, lack of hours and pay.

Advice to Senior ManagementAs a huge corporation, I don't feel the little man is valued. I've even heard health benefits to part time employees are being cut. If you can't "afford" to pay your workers a decent rate, you should at least supply them with FREE health insurance.

Not what I thought they'd be

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Target

ProsTeam members I became friends with. The employee discount. It was a great opportunity to get back in the work force.

ConsThe outright favoritism is very unprofessional. The degrading of team members and the level of drama with upper management is pathetic.

Learn lots while you're there- but don't stay

Executive Team Leader - Logistics (Former Employee)

I worked at Target full-time for more than a year

ProsRelationships with peers and the overall training program. You will learn to lead over 100+ people which is cool for a fresh out of college graduate. You will learn to handle all kinds of situations as a manager and will grow tremendously as a professional.

Cons-Be prepared for having NO life whatsoever. When winter comes, you will never see the light of day working 10-12+ hour days. Thanksgiving dinner you will not get to spend with your family- you will be stressed out Christmas Eve, and work New Years as well.
-You also need to learn how to function on about 4 hours of sleep. Closing the store at 11pm at night then needing to be back at 6am to open can be brutal with a longer commute.
-There will be complete unrealistic expectations with the amount of time it takes to complete your job. You will never get your job 100% done, and there's always more to do. I never felt a good sense of accomplishment in my role.
-They do offer vacation- it accumulates very slow, you need to work 1 year to accum. 2 weeks, also you are eligible for bonuses- but that is if your store is doing well. I worked in a low volume store and my bonus was about $100. ha!
-Also, your review has nothing to do with you- but on how well your store is performing. If your store is suffering, your review will be disappointing no matter what.
-When you leave the company they are "cult-like" and will completely disown you.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe pay is not enough for the hours worked.
Also wish it was easier to terminate bottom performing employees.
If you do not want ETL turnover, lessen the workload- its simply too much to handle.

Rather sub-par experience in the 6 months I worked there as a cashier...

Cashier (Current Employee)

I have been working at Target part-time for less than a year

ProsOn busy days, mainly after school let out, the job was very fast paced and the days would go by much faster. Employees would get a discount of almost all items in the store which helped save money. Managers, at least at this store, were always very good about giving positive feedback and letting you know what needed to be changed.

ConsOnce I reached my 90 day review, management would not let me change my schedule to fit my needs, which is very important for a college student. Eventually, they started to schedule me during my classes and I began to be penalized for that even after talking to who ever was in charge of scheduling that week. As well, they were very, VERY pushy in making sure you pitched sales for the Target credit or debit card, which in turn would irritate customers. The backlash came out on the cashiers the most.

Not too bad but the company has had better days

Electronics Team Member (Current Employee)

I have been working at Target part-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe schedule is very flexible and it is easy to get time off, there are a lot of awesome people who work with you that are willing to help you, Some team leads are helpful, if you kiss up enough you can move up to team lead, Skill level required is really low.

ConsHours are hard to come by during non-holiday times, Expectations are put on you even though there is no real reward for reaching goals, team lead positions are getting phased out so chances for advancement are going away, in store management is becoming more and more corporate so they don't do any store work and delegate everything, new managers are fresh faced college graduates who have never worked retail, pay is not very high but for the required skill level you can't really complain, yearly raises get capped so after a certain amount of time you stop getting raises.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop becoming corporate and go back to when managers did actual work rather than just walk around and talk about what needs to be done and stop separating yourself from team members and try to actually be a part of the team.
