I worked at Tata Steel full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great Development in inter-personal skills, business ethics, business conduct, corporate culture and negotiation skills. It is a good place for a person who want to find a balance between his work and life.

    Cons

Very repetitive job, you may not get verbal appraisals time to time when you want one from your higher ups but u will definitely get at the end of year. Sometimes jobs can be very demanding and chances of landing up with unfriendly boss.

    Pros

Compensation is great, lot of facilities like accommodation, club house, medical facilities. People are helpful. New ideas are encouraged. Good for personal growth if you are from mining or mechanical engineering, Lot of emphasize on Safety.

    Cons

Poor work-life balance, if posted in raw materials division then remote locations, less opportunity to grow for an electrical engineer, company management is not in sync with its values.

I have been working at Tata Steel full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

If you want to lead a comfortable life, this is the company to work for.
It's a very big company, so the work load is always divided and you will always get your comfort time.

    Cons

As I mentioned that the work load is less, so the learning you will be expecting in the IT field is not much.
So, if you want to have a good working experience in the IT industry, ITS division of Tata Steel is not for that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Resource management in terms of manpower also needs to be improved.

I have been working at Tata Steel full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Learning organization - provides opportunities to learn and develop in a secure environment
Good medical benefits policy for spouse and parents
Decent salary and emoluments, not special but good

    Cons

Slow, dull and not dynamic at all
No policy for internal career planning and growth of employees
Middle management is very poor and self centered - mostly filled with yes men. Differing opinions are subdued and creativity stifled
Departmental chiefs treat them as their personal fiefdoms, hardly any inter-departmental co-ordination, more time is spent on blame-shifting and saving their own skin then actually getting some work done
Semi-governmental approach - pseudo meritocracy is practised in the name of internal interviews for promotions etc which is a sham and the annual appraisal system sucks big time.
The salary increment for a promotion from IL5 to IL4 after 4-5 years of labour works out to a measly 5-6k a month, or rs 50-60k annually..even lower if you consider it post tax....!! there is no incentive for real talent and ambitious people to stay for the long term unless they have some family or medical issues for which the organization is great

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The attitude of the middle management needs to be changed big time. I guess its because of the decaying nature of the organization that this global behemoth is floundering big time whereas other new steel companies such as JSW, essar etc are able to growth at a much much faster rate despite not having the advantage of captive iron and coal mines. I guess the senior management also knows that very few people with real ambition and talent stick around the company anyway and realize that the internal people are not upto the task which is why they have been recruiting all the senior management from outside the company for the top leadership roles.

Please try to put in place some career planning and change the appraisal system to reflect real leadership potential as otherwise good people will continue to leave and the vacuum at middle and senior level will persist.
