Constant change

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Telefónica

ProsExposure to different tech trends

ConsConstant transformation means things never settle down. Means the organisation never gets forward momentum,
As people expect yet another restructure round the corner

Advice to Senior ManagementStop making people having to re apply for their jobs every 6 months in the UK

Constant change has exhausted good people's patience

User Experience Designer (Current Employee)

I have been working at Telefónica full-time for more than a year

ProsInnovation areas get to try out ideas with new and exciting technology, the people are good, some are exceptional especially in wed dev, creative tech and innovation. If you can deliver the work, flexible work life balance is second to none.

ConsA dislocation from the reality of the market, and no real answer to the question of what happens to telcos in a digital future (Hint, you are a dumb pipe). Closing down of the Digital subsidiary not exactly an inspired move - chaos reigns. Any energy or enthusiasm has been wiped out, and pay levels that were below market rate might be acceptable when excitement is flowing - not so now. No real career progression available, and upper management is 99% male, white and predominately Spanish.

Advice to Senior ManagementTop level strategy is unclear, vacuous communication from leaders. Lower level strategy and day to day tactics either non-existent or poorly communicated - honestly, I couldn't tell which. This company has no real vision, chooses to hide behind jargon and management bs.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Brand give you an initial good perception, but scratch the surface and you see a much different o2!

Business Sales (Current Employee)

I have been working at Telefónica full-time for more than a year

ProsFlexible working
Peer group support
Good brand Identity

ConsToo much middle management
Clique with out of touch senior management
Targets changed countless times in the last 12 months - no stability for sales guys.
Lack of support

I have been working at O2 UK for nearly two years and in which time there has been words/phrases such as, 'Strategy', and 'Wider picture', etc that become empty after a while. At each briefing the senior management are so full of their own self importance spewing out inspirational quotes and 'high fiving', each other that they actually believe what they are saying.

They seem to be out of touch with a lot of the front line sales people and do not listen about challenges in the market. Its only when they perceive it to be a challenge they will change process, at which time its too late.

Middle management talk of their wider support and how they are there to help you progress, but they are effectively nothing more that glamorised bean counters that ask you repeatedly for duplicated spreadsheets with forecasts that you have already given them 7 times in one morning.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the front line sales people and implement relevant changes.

I have been working at Telefónica full-time for more than 10 years (but not much more... ;-)

Network Engineer (Current Employee)
Madrid (Spain)

I have been working at Telefónica full-time for more than 10 years

ProsWith the current rate of unemployment in Spain (26%)? Everyone will claim it is a "secure" company.

ConsCivil service style of management, high bureaucracy, very different environments with varied treatment for both employees and customers (Telefonica Corp, O2, Telefonica International, European and American countries where Telefonica operates). Too heavy weight of trade unions lacking flexibility, innovation, projection planning and profesionalism in general.

The Peter Principle is usually accomplished in a classic hierarchically structured company like Telefonica. As someone said: "Getting anything done around here is like mating elephants: 1it's done at high level; 2 it's accomplished with a great deal of roaring and screaming; 3 it takes two years to get results.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpecially to the highest level: Telefonica is not a monopoly any more. Did you know?

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

An old company with too man polytics inside

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Telefónica for more than 10 years

Prosstable salary: you know you're going to be paid. Sometimes event 2-3 days before the end of month.
One of the biggest companies in spain (if not the biggest one).

ConsHeadcount fixed... and declining.
There are no new hires, unless it's the son/friend/nephew of a high-level executive.

Advice to Senior Management"Gerentes" are free to do whatever they want.
Directors and above are playing only office polytics: they don't have any idea about what's going on.

Lost it's way. Not a nice place to work anymore

Head of (Current Employee)
Slough, Berkshire, South East England, England (UK)

I have been working at Telefónica

ProsNice office and amenities.
Ok training
Opportunities to move around (though not necessarily up) and exposure to some new areas-eg financial services, media, health etc

ConsUsed to be v focused on customer insight but has become too commercially driven. Senior management has become quite detatched from the troops. Internal employee satisfaction scores are declining
Teams have been slimmed back so work/life balance suffers.
Marketing Director still fails to motivate and has zero people skills

Advice to Senior ManagementGet back to what made you famous. Invest in the new areas more. Re-connect with your people and learn how to motivate them again
