Great ride while it lasted. Ship sank under poor management

Senior Product Manager (Former Employee) Naperville, IL

ProsCutting edge technology, family like culture, great comp & benefits

ConsManagement slow to making decisions which led to missing market share, analysis paralysis & constant directional changes. Layoffs every Q which has employees on edge instead of focusing on work

Advice to Senior ManagementCut the layers of management & go back to doing business to match the low revenue stream coming through now. You're still operating w a lot of layers & overhead of nice to have employees, processes, tools. Scale back to the days where people wear many hats & do what is needed to get things done. Support R&D in new development of key features that many customers want; not just the customers who scream the loudest.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Death by a thousand cuts...

Product Manager (Current Employee) Naperville, IL

ProsReasonable compensation, flexible working environment, focus is on higher growth product areas in the telecom space, ongoing difficulties have fostered good employee camaraderie. Decent customer footprint.

ConsNo strategy or vision, management tends to be reactionary and tactical in their decision making. Questionable and public lack of confidence in new CEO. Very risk averse and incestuous culture. Environment does not reward risk takers or those who challenge the status quo...future highly unstable.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe bold, get a strategy and commit to it. Sell a vision to our customers and the marketplace to help build back any credibility. Bring in outsiders to garner new perspectives. Invest and move away from the "shrink our way to prosperity" mode.

    Penny Wise, Pound Foolish

Senior Test Engineer (Former Employee) Naperville, IL

ProsGreat people - knowledgeable and good work ethics
Amenities - parking garages for all, good cafeteria and other services
    Very clean facilities

ConsEverytime the market hiccups they lay people off even though they are debt free.
Obsessed with outsourcing everything to other countries just because they are cheaper workforce. But you get what you pay for - high turnover which is disruptive - and the time difference makes it challenging to get things done in a timely fashion.
Unrealistic deadlines that no-one takes seriously.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart making realistic achievable deadlines which saves money and stress.
Keep the U.S. talent and stop trying to save a buck with overseas help.

    Senior software Engineer

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA

ProsGreat Team. Smart engineers. Some of the most talented individuals that I have had the experience of working with. From a compensation perspective, Tellabs was amazing and above market. Benifits were great, 401k matching, best in class health.

ConsProcess is very rigid and a very all school feel to it. Complete end to end waterfall that we very slow to move, and wasted a lot of time. Difficult to advance quickly or hire the right people as HR had some very rigid criteria a candidate had to meed before one would even apply for a given position.

    Sinking Fast

Senior Engineer (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA

Pros- Some very competent Engineers and generally a good bunch of people to work with.
    - Good work / life balance.
    - Decent benefits / compensation.

Cons- Company has no respect for Engineers.
    - Company is incapable of organic product development because they refuse to respect and retain talent. The only way they can innovate is to buy other companies.
    - Too many layers of management who are more concerned with reorganizing to protect their own jobs than doing what is right for the success of the company.
    - Management decisions are based upon politics and turf-wars between HQ in Naperville, IL and remote offices rather than what is best for the product or company as a whole.
    - Some very bad hiring decisions were made just to get people in the door. Resulted in incompetent or very inexperienced people working on critical projects.
    - Constant reorganizations and layoffs. More effort is put into reorganizing than how to produce a good product.
    - Poor decisions have put the company years behind the competition.
    - Sad story. Was a decent company until the current CEO took over. I was hoping they would continue to grow their Silicon Valley presence (like so many other companies) and become a growing force in the networking industry. Unfortunately they are reducing their presence in Silicon Valley, retreating to HQ, and making extremely poor decisions that will ultimately lead to their demise.

Advice to Senior ManagementReplace the CEO and anyone reporting to him. The only way this old mid-Western company is going to compete in the networking industry is to clear out the incompetent management and get people in charge (preferably from Silicon Valley) who are willing to do the right things.

Potential to succeed, eroded by poor management and execution.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Naperville, IL

ProsVery fair work/life balance. Staff and mid-tier management are caring and supportive. Many opportunities to make an impact, as the company is struggling.

ConsExecutive management lacks leadership and execution ability. 'Old boy' network promotes friends over performance and effort. Overall, the company can not last long on the path it has gone down.

Tellabs has new IT leadership that is arrogant and uninformed! Once they outsource the IT Dept. the company will fail.

IT Employee (Current Employee) Naperville, IL

ProsStarted out a great place to work. When the times were good and the money was rolling in it was OK. They allowed for training classes yearly and respected people. You could get promoted for doing great work.

ConsPromotions are for brown-nosers only now. People that started out as college interns and only been there 5 years are being turned into Directors! People in IT with many many years of loyal service are fleeing there because they plan on outsourcing the whole IT dept. However the VPs have not even gotten Board of Director approval on this outsourcing plan yet! If the Board rejects it and they keep IT in-house IT will be in trouble anyways at this point. People are RUNNING to look for new jobs in IT over there now.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop trying to outsource something that you know NOTHING about. Treat people with respect and communicate your plans with your employees.

worst mistake of my career accepting this position instead of many others offered at the time

Staff Software Engineer (Current Employee) Naperville, IL

ProsIf you are a talented politician you can probablly go far without ever having to do any real work or be held accountable. Very understanding about work/life balence. The actual worker bees are very nice people.

ConsPolitically based promotions, raises and business decisions.
    Extremely inefficent.
    Old Technology.

Awful watching people who have spent 20+ years working hard for the organization walked out the door.

Advice to Senior Managementshow some loyalty to the people who helped build and make Tellabs successful.

    We do office politics, professionally!

Staff Engineer (Current Employee) Petaluma, CA

ProsYou get your paycheck every other week. Work life balance, relaxing atmosphere.

ConsYou don’t really need to deliver anything meaningful as long as you are close to the inner circle or simply behave politically correct. Managements obviously have no clues what they are doing. The only thing on their agenda is to keep their own jobs. Worse yet, they build colony with cronies. So it ends up this place is full of below par, if not mediocre, same kinds of incompetents. It’s not surprised to see unsuccessful projects one after one, even in super slow pace.

Advice to Senior ManagementInstead of consistently denying, please do follow the industrial definition of what is successful, and ask yourselves when was the last time any successful projects were delivered under excellent supervision of yours? The total headcount of AFC drops from 1000+ to 100+ in how many years? Do something before it’s too late, when you still have the last few good ones.
