    telecommute two days a week

    Cons

    No room for growth and no raises in over 4 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Share the wealth. This company is losing its most talented people because there is no room for growth and there have not been raises in years. Most people will jump ship as soon as another opportunity presents itself and this company will only be left with its management staff who bring in no revenue to this company.

    I worked at Telos as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

    Great location in the middle of suburbia in northern Virginia; beautiful building & grounds; great vending / break room

    Cons

    CEO is eccentric (not in a good way), egocentric & distracted with his own personal political agenda which disrupts getting projects done for clients; middle management consists of husbands & wives & children of other Telos employees, making it impossible to work effectively on a team because criticism is not allowed (everyone's related to a higher-up, so unless you have a connection, you're dead in the water); conformist middle management suffers from solipsism. New & innovative ideas (not of the status quo) are met with suspicion & jealousy which, more often than not, leads to firings. Only "yes men / yes women" succeed, & often at the cost of the team, contract, & client. Telos is notorious for their fast hire / fast fire tactics. They have a negative reputation in the security community inside & outside the Beltway because of their entrenched, stale, "dead wood" middle management & inability to deliver to the big government clients. There is also a "playground" mentality on some of the more important government contract project teams which also suffer from blatant sexism & sexual harassment which is allowed to flourish with impunity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    For a company to succeed, it must have a soul. Telos as a company is soulless. If the employee - the company's most valuable resource - is not treated with fairness & honesty, the employer will fail. Quasi-benevolent dictatorships are so last century, as are womb-to-tomb middle management jobs. Get in there & clean out the Augean stables. Follow the example of the original MCI Communications & install & adhere to a strict anti-nepotism policy. And to the CEO: You may have failed before as a CEO & you may have yourself convinced that, as Telos CEO, you're failing better. But you're still failing.

    I worked at Telos

    Pros

    If you live in Loudoun, its probably the closest govt IT company to your house
    Plenty of parking
    Lots of younger professionals (could also be a con)

    Cons

    Senior Management is an old school boys club. Better play golf or learn quick!
    Most of the company's focus is on hiring high ranking ex-military for their connections, not ideas
    Secondary focus is hiring fresh out of college in order to low ball and offer cheaper benefits
    Layoffs about every few years (ask to see how long the most senior HR person has been with the company. They're the last to go after they've given the bad news to others)
    Lots of lawsuits - watch your personal communications

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Just because it wasn't your idea, doesn't mean it isn't a good idea. Also, get rid of the catty older women who contribute nothing to the bottom line.

    I have been working at Telos

    Pros

    Telos operates like a family run shop, so everyone eventually gets to know everyone.
    Benefits are surprisingly pleasing.
    Flex time is accepted by senior management, win-win for everyone.

    Cons

    * As a firm specializing in technical solutions, the workplace feels and looks extremely antiquated.
    * Most of the business groups are failing and are kept afloat by only one or two groups. That means money made in those groups, goes to the company to fill holes elsewhere. Not much money remains in the group. Means little self-improvement is made.
    * Management is stuck in the old-school way of doing business. They're afraid to suggest new ways of doing business to senior management, leading to the most ridiculous, convoluted solutions to be created. It's embarrassing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop making technical decisions without consulting the young/smart people.
