Nashville, TN

Former Employee – worked at Tennessee State University

ProsFree classes, good benefits, easy access off Interstate, many paid days off to recover from being at work. Good band and pep squad. Up-to-date computer equipment and software campuswide-they did a good job keeping the latest bells and whistles on everyone's computer.

ConsPolitics, favoritism, some people were not challenged when they acted inappropriately because administrators feared backlash. Inappropriate references to people's religious beliefs and proselytizing--religious messages on employee's voicemail, questions about religious beliefs during job interviews. Salary compression a huge problem--newly graduated faculty brought in at the current salary of 20-year veterans.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop being so label conscious. Stop worrying about whether other schools are getting bigger or better pieces of cake than you and focus on baking and frosting your own cake.

Former Employee – worked at Tennessee State University

ProsGratifying to work for the benefit of young people.
Good location at either campus (for ease of access)
Good benefits if you are eligible.

ConsConstant stream of controversies and decline in admissions make it sometimes stressful to work there.
You may feel administration is incompetent.
Lack of support for the institution from the Board of Regents, the school's governing body.

Advice to Senior ManagementRealize that being more open to losing the "black identity" of the institution may create more opportunities for black students by keeping the Board's hands off the curriculum.
