For a fortune 100 company, IT is very immature, lacks leadership. policies and process; very "clubish" culture

I have been working at Tesoro Corporation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Tesoro as an organization is a good place to work. The pay, benefits and facilities are good. The oil and gas business in general is a good industry to be in. There are lots of people there that have worked here for years and enjoy the company.

    Cons

Tesoro is a big company that shows lots of "mom and pop" like maturity, especially in the IT department. There is a lot of "that's the way it's always been done" ideology. In working with finance, HR, audit, marketing and IT, the most immature of the groups is IT. IT lacks the appropriate leadership and is seen as a cost center with little value (seems to be the attitude across the business). There is no true CIO and COO positions; managed through reaction and chaos. NO TRUE PROGRESSION planning for IT.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Align IT with the business, create CIO role and place competent, Fortune 100 experienced individual in this role. Evaluate organizational structure for delivery of services to support the refinery, logistics and marketing needs of the organization.

I have seen the company grow and become more and more corpratized. Bigger is not necessarily better.

    Pros

decent benefits, week on/ week off rotation

    Cons

corporate management in San Antonio, work load

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

we are non-union yet upper management fosters non-loyalty and makes people want to go union by constantly cutting benefits and making talented, hard working people look for other employment.

I have been working at Tesoro Corporation

    Pros

Very much a "family" environment with excellent work/life balance. Benefits are great with $1 for $1 401K matching, excellent health benefits, and decent pay/bonuses.

    Cons

Can feel like an old boys club and very cliquish which, if you're in the "in" crowd is great, but if you're in the "out" crowd you pretty much can go unnoticed and stagnate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take performance management and employee development seriously if you want to attract and retain the best talent.
