    I worked at Textron Systems

    Pros

Company provides great benefits, flexible work schedules, good time off packages

    Cons

Management is out of touch with employees. The lower level "laborers" seem to carry most of the weight, does not invest in tooling necessary to do current and future job, does not believe in training for employees to effectively progress in positions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

get more in touch with your backbone, middle management.

I have been working at Textron Systems full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Money is good; people want to succeed; work hard at customer satisfaction (mainly because they have to); hire good technical talent

    Cons

Behind the times; Management talent poor; process of the month club mentality; huge technical debt; poor process improvement

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire some progressive thinking managers and give them freedom

I worked at Textron Systems full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The contract with the customer laid out an aggressive schedule with a limited, fixed-price budget that put a strain on negotiations with both the customer and subcontractors. The people staffing the project were highly experienced in developing the technology needed and brought a tremendous insight into how to execute the project. I learned a great deal about this aspect of customer operations and technology.

    Cons

The limited budget and schedule imposed harsh restrictions on how to communicate with subcontractors and with the customer to the point of withholding useful (but not critical or illegal) information about tasks and resources. There was no career advancement path at all.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realign the project management approach to the current expectations of the customer and step away from the restrictions imposed in the proposal that are not truly required.

I worked at Textron Systems as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

I worked with the new Ship to Shore Connector, cool project....being run a ground by poor Management = such a shame, could be an awesome rig were it not left to incompetence....and of course bean counters, who can't see past the bureaucracy of pedigree ( a degree is better than dyed in the wool experience) so sad for Textron

    Cons

I am a Mechanical designer (their system of choice Solidworks) the models I dealt with were by far the worst I have had to work with in my career (poor modeling techniques)....so now I understand why they were sooooo excited when they found out that I DID understand Solidworks - the employees do try, the ones they keep are the young fresh people with brand new B.S.M.E.'s and ZERO experience = which equals FAILURE

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get off the golf course out into the fray =dump the good old boys, seek out talent, reward talent and remember - a politician has NEVER designed anything which has ay redeemable value - NEVER

I have been working at Textron Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I was with this company for 5+ years and found it to be a good working environment. At the time of my employment there were a bunch of PMs that were due to retire in the next 3 years and I had an eye on advancing my career in that area. Perk and time-off policies were industry standard for that time.

    Cons

No mentorship. No forward vision and 500 of us got laid off on a Thursday. For three years we asked what the strategic vision was, why weren't writing proposals for new work as the major programs were winding down. Then we lost two programs in a month and most of the experience was shown the door.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The old management is gone, as they deserved to be, and the company re tooled and revectored. I hope they all spent a long time going over lessons learned.

I worked at Textron Systems full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The corporate headquarters in Austin, TX is a great location and the facility itself is very nice and conducive to collaboration and developers working long hours.

    Cons

The company suffers from bloated middle management and lack of business ethic. Employees supporting federal contracts must maintain a foot out the door and prepare for inevitable layoff.

I have been working at Textron Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good location in southwest Austin. If you're lucky, you occasionally get the opportunity to work on new things (IRAD).
Great people to work with who become great network assets (many employees have left after being recruited by other former employees)

    Cons

No insight into company's future past the next few weeks at a time. As a result, management direction is very reactive and not very proactive.
Not able to do things to improve current products or processes unless you have "direct charge", but there's never enough time under the direct charge to improve existing items.
Much of the work we've had lately has been limited to bug fixes the customer prioritizes, not too much new features or fixing internally discovered bugs.
Many coworkers have left for other jobs, leaving the rest of us scrambling.
Extremely hard to get a raise or promotion unless you already are in a level of management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look past the next week or month when making plans and decisions. Find a better way to share knowledge and transition roles upon someone giving their two weeks notice. Think strategically about using indirect money to improve customer's opinions of us and our software quality, rather than chase the same IRAD dreams.

    Pros

Large umbrella of companies within Textron Corp you can move around in.

    Cons

Understaffed and underfunded. My department was cut in half and the workload doubled. The problems in the company created by mismanagement quickly become the employees problems. NO WORK LIFE BALANCE! Never fully off work. Called on weekends anywhere from 8am to 1am for "emergency projects" I left company for this reason and have never been happier.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your mismanagement is not my emergency.

I have been working at Textron Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Decent working conditions and hours. Employees are definitely their best asset. Salaries are average for the industry but raises have fallen off in the last couple of years.

    Cons

Too bad management doesn't realize that employees made the company what it was and is. No loyalty to long term employees. Many feel like they are being or have been forced out. Very low employee morale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try making the employees happy and the dollars will take care of themselves.

I worked at Textron Systems full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The people are great and extremely knowledgeable due to many years experience. Benefits are good but declining with the rest of corporate America. Pay is good to start but it can be very difficult to remain at market pay as the raises are anemic at best.

    Cons

Primary issue is current management and a distinct lack of new work in the pipeline. (This is specific to Textron Defense Systems). There are mass layoffs while simultaneously hiring new people in order to make the workforce more youthful. All this does is disenfranchise everyone there. Management focus's on short term financial goals by eliminating people to enhance profit but at a significant cost to future capability and employee morale. IR&D spending is too small for an organization of this size which has and will continue to stymie growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This is a great and proud institution with some amazing people and potential but is being hurt by management concerned with nothing else but the short term bottom line. If this trend continues this facility will be out of commission very soon.
