Textron, formally known as AAI Corporation gave me a fabulous career.

I worked at Textron Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

During my time AAI Corporation was a great place to do research and development for new products that were always cutting edge for hardware products. The office culture was casual professional, but the tasks were seriously attended. An individual could work as much as desired to complete the assigned tasks. The professional compensation was on target with industry.

    Cons

The technology curve is the largest obstacle to program schedules. The biggest issue has been the demand of upper management to perform to unrealistic profit percentages. Management also places unnecessary pressure on staff to pull schedules in to a quarter or year end to make profit where other programs have slid. This places undue pressure on full teams during test and integration procedures. Management appears not to have a good understanding of the full engineering and test requirements of a system prior to customer acceptance. This is a current cultural issue which can have adverse affects on the core business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better understanding of the product development process. Work closer with engineering and ISC to understand the real effort to perform the development, manufacturing/purchasing and support processes such as QA, ILS and CM. Build and earn trust with full staff. Then they will trust management and work together successfully.

I have been working at Textron Systems full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There are a lot of great people to work with at TS. The product line is unique and interesting.

    Cons

Tight deadlines causes major staff fatigue and departures. Also, there is not a focus on the growth of the product. Instead, there is focus on completion of a contract.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focusing on the product and system will bring future growth for the company. TS hires good people. Find ways to keep them interested and around.

I worked at Textron Systems full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Interesting engineering projects do occur occasionally. Some of them have good resources, at least for a while. Decent hours.

    Cons

There is a lot of engineering process garbage that is required as part of the job. Most of it adds little value but allows Textron to charge the government for it. There are lots of big time wasting tasks. The raises are terrible even if you excel.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on providing real value to the customer.

    Pros

For the most part, the people are great.
    You get some good experience.
    Work on some cool projects.
    Good entry level salary.

    Cons

Trying to get any sort of compensation increase is like pulling teeth.
We never really know what's going on with a project.
    Project guidance is minimal.

Great place to work for some, not for others. Culture matters.

I worked at Textron Systems full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

A lot of the employees have been there for decades, so some people clearly enjoy it.
The pay and benefits are competitive, though confusing. The HR department is great at sorting out the aforementioned confusion.
The food in the cafeteria is not bad, and many people eat lunch together there, instead of alone at their desks, which is a plus. They have a (mediocre) gym on site.
The company meetings are (relative to other companies) informative and honest, and the local management (of Textron Systems, not Textron corporate) are friendly.
Hours are reasonable--some people work long hours, others don't.

    Cons

These were Cons for me, but some people obviously enjoy it.
You make cluster bombs for a living.
There is not much teamwork involved, you're mostly working in your cube by yourself.
If you email someone senior to you outside your group, though, they may not even acknowledge the email.
Because you work on government projects, you need to log what you are working on in 6-minute increments.
Negative attitudes, shouting, and swearing are more common than at anywhere else I have worked.

Bottom line: It's a large government contractor that makes weapons. Some like it, some don't.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The CEO (of Textron corporate) could visit now and then. I thought the Textron Systems management was doing a good job.
