I have been working at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great team environment. I learned a tremendous amount from my fellow designers. I was able to do world travel and visit people around the globe. When work was happening, it was inspirational. When people were guarding their territories and refusing to give up information to get work done, it was hard. This taught me how to quickly build trust with new clients and departments. A life lesson I've used elsewhere.

    Cons

Trying to collaborate across fifedoms was hard. I was trying to do the product manager's job and he was trying to do mine (designer). As a service organization, there needed to be a clear cut hand-off between the sponsoring departments and the service being rendered. It just took too long to get things done and decided on.

    Advice to Management

I felt like an Amish or polygamist woman going to work. It was embarrassing. Make some hard business decisions and stop being 'nice.'

    Pros

    The benefit package is inexpensive.

    Cons

Even though you work for "The Church," it is run by business men making business decisions. No guidance from God.

    Advice to Management

    Pay employees more.

I worked at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great Mission statement, amazing benefits, good people (mostly) a good environment that can be a fun and interesting place to be

    Cons

overwhelming bureaucracy makes change nearly impossible and constant reorganizations only exacerbate the problem.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Supportive coworkers, positive culture, people are generally friendly and willing to help.

    Cons

There is a very top-down communication structure. It 's hard to send messages up the chain, especially outside of ICS. Everything goes through the CFO. Sometimes suggestions for improvement get misinterpreted as personal attacks rather than professional suggestions. Communication between portfolios is also poor. This is especially true when it comes to the HR department, which will sometimes change contracts or offers last-minute without notifying the employee, or without inviting concerned parties to contribute. The two-year contingent contract has a reputation for being unsavory--not as many FTE positions available as one would hope.

I have been working at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great work-life balance and low stress environment. Products are shifting to a more relevant style and the stale-ness is starting to start to fade. Great benefits. You'll never get yelled at. In fact you might never see anger. Only disappointment at best.

    Cons

Boring. There isn't much of a career path on the creative side of things. Seems like the super nice atmosphere breeds mediocrity. There are some great people and talented artists, they just don't stay as long as they should to really influence the work.

    Advice to Management

Create a work culture that entices talent to stay.
