I worked at The Gap full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great work-life balance, flexible hours, good benefits.

    Cons

Hard to move up and grow professionally. Gap kept hiring more VPs/Directors/etc instead of promoting from within, creating more and more layers of approvals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your employees, stop hiring advertising agencies, and have faith in your product/the brand.

I have been working at The Gap

    Pros

The employee discount is great..who doesn't love 50% off full price clothes?

    Cons

I have been there about 6 months and was hired on at minimum wage. I was told when I got hired it was easy to get raises, especially if you open many gap cards, are a hard worker, etc and I am still sitting at minimum wage. Not a big deal though, just gotta keep working hard and being a team player!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My availability is pretty open (about 8 shifts per week) and yet I get 1 or 2 a week consistently, while my managers are still hiring more people. (This goes for many other employees too who are getting a low amount of shifts).

I worked at The Gap part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

They have great employee discounts in the company and with partner companies. The leadership of the store truly cares about the work environment and encourages all employees to have a stake in the success of the store.

    Cons

Professional growth can be hard and many times you may have to move to another store which may not offer the same atmosphere or be convenient.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take notice of the employees beyond rewards. If an employee wants to grow in the company, help them do so.

    I worked at The Gap

    Pros

Company is growing again, great employees, potential for growth. The salary for the position I held is at or above average for the role at other companies. I always felt my work was valued by my director and manager. Higher management is very engaged with the field for example the VP of distribution knew all of the names of the supervisors in each of the buildings throughout the network.

    Cons

Tenured peers and managers are difficult to work with and resistant to change. Work life balance is a challenge due to potential OT and sixth day that you are required to work when it is busy. Path to upward mobility is unclear. The company is attempting to expand but is not adding the support needed to do so in the areas of supervisor, maintenance or HR staffing. This is not the fault of the company but the location of the facility is not great. Fishkill is located in between Poughkeepsie and Newburg which are urban wastelands infested with drugs and crime. Rent in the area is outrageous and homes in the decent areas near the building are priced highly and have oppressive property taxes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give new supervisors clear feedback on how to get to their next desired role. Have a better plan for staffing to avoid heavy ot as this causes supervisor and associate burnout. Add proper support to HR and maintenance as well as a plan for supervisor staffing that supports the expansion into online.
