    Enjoyed it

    Sales Associate (Former Employee)
    Pittsburgh, PA

ProsThe people I worked with at the Gap made my experience enjoyable. It wasn't always easy getting to work at 5 am to stock the shelves, but we made the best of it.

ConsIt would be a nice gesture for the Gap to offer benefits to more of their hourly employees who are putting in nearly forty hours of work per week.

    Enjoyable Experience

    Senior Financial Analyst (Former Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsThe people are a pleasure to work with and be around. Work/life balance is good. Company has good values. The work was good experience and I learned a lot.

ConsEvery year there is major re-organization which is a drag on the employees and consumes a lot of time which could be directed elsewhere.

Advice to Senior ManagementNone other than it would be nice to have some continuity with management.

    Great culture

    Sales Associate (Current Employee)

Pros50% discount! You get to be yourself and work with a diverse group of people (co-workers & customers). The company really values the employees. It's a great job for college students and overall great place to really learn about retail and customer behaviors. Holiday season is actually fun except for the store being a mess!

ConsThey put a ton of pressure on you about the Gap card...that's the biggest con. Sometimes the hours can be inconsistent and it's not the best pay as it is (but they're trying to do better than some places). There's room for growth in the company, maybe not your particular store you might have to move to another location but it's possible.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide better training to new employees.

    Great place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsI worked at Gap (Headquarters) for more than 5 years. Very talented people, challenging work, great perks (discount). Trying to be progressive from a "people" perspective - i.e. ROWE / flexible work environment

ConsLow on pay, a lot of politics/bureaucracy. Some people have been at Gap Inc. for TOO LONG. Time for more fresh blood.

Advice to Senior ManagementTone from the top - you need people in leadership roles that people can look up to. You should build in core, fundamental leadership requirements for people at the VP+ levels and not promote people or retain them if they don't demonstrate those competencies.

Great place to work if you have the right GM.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThey love internal hires. I started out as an associate and worked my way up. I stayed with the company for six years, and I would consider going back to corporate because I know they take care of their employees. GREAT benefits, paid time off, and all-in-all an easy work environment for the type of job it is.

ConsThe wrong general manager (GM) can absolutely kill the work environment. I've had good GMs and terrible GMs. The problem: nobody wants to admit there's a problem! At the last store I was at, the turnover rate reached 95% within three months because the GM was so bad. As a group, the assistant managers and key holders went to the district manager (DM) about the issues with the GM. The higher up you go though, the less you'll get done. The DM did nothing, and everyone continued to quit. I finally had to step away after six years, and it was a real shame.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your employees. When we say the GM is bad, we mean it!
