New York, NY

Former Employee – worked at The Gap part-time for less than a year

ProsGreat flexibility, easy work, fun environment, worked with great people, great perks such as discounts and bonuses, and decent pay for retail.

ConsNo full time available unless part of management, really push you to get credit cards, too much competition for higher positions, Christmas time the store is chaos, and drastically cut hours during slow sales.

Advice to Senior ManagementOffer more full time positions!

ProsPositive working environment; managers are wonderful! I love that the company aspires to "do more than just sell clothes." Social responsibility is important to me, and I love working for a company whose values mirror my own.

San Francisco, CA

Former Employee – worked at The Gap full-time

ProsTop notch perks & benefits
Work/life balance programs that make a huge difference
Volunteer opportunities and great global consciousness
Pleasant offices
Very fashionable, young employee base

ConsDirector level and above are difficult to connect with and have huge egos
With many management changes, it's tough to make progress (rules keep changing)
People have their fiefdoms and defend those instead of working together
Although they only had a few people reporting to them, my manager/s rarely had time to meet with me and cancelled many of our meetings (in favor of far more important people...gee, make me feel special, why don't you?)

Advice to Senior ManagementFollow basic managerial etiquette. Pay attention to your direct reports. Care about them. If two months has gone by and you haven't spoken with one of your direct reports, MAKE TIME (and these were HR managers. Unacceptable.)
Reorganizations and shuffling of managers may seem exciting to the Director & above level, but to the rest of us, they are distracting time wasters and unnecessary.
