This is a very positive school to work at, love the staff and Owner and Director

Lead Teacher (Current Employee)

I have been working at The Goddard School full-time

ProsGreat children and wonderful staff

ConsThe management requires that if you are sick you have to use your vacation days to be paid. You do not have a choice to take the day with out pay and save your vacation days for a vacation. No paid sick days or personal days only vacation days are earned here. No vision coverage.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt would be very good if staff was not required to use vacation days when sick. Employees should have a choice to use vacation days or not

Family owned, each school has their own way of running their own school.

Lead Teacher (Current Employee)

I have been working at The Goddard School full-time for more than 3 years

ProsIf you love children, and love to see them learn through play, it's a great place to be.

ConsEach school has their own benefits depending on the owners. They are not all the same.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey need to communicate and keep organized and listen to the teachers needs.

Passionate school that stays connected with families past and present.

Lead Teacher (Current Employee)
Third Lake, IL

I have been working at The Goddard School full-time for more than 3 years

ProsLots of freedom to design curriculum. Amazing healthcare package with low out of pocket costs. Short term disability benefits and such. Raises are performance based percentages.

ConsInconsistencies among management. Owner makes the calls to close early to not open due to weather- cares more about money than anything. Directors are gossipy and unprofessional

Advice to Senior ManagementStay connected to your employees and don't be condescending or patronizing

Director of education

Director of Education (Former Employee)
Frederick, MD

I worked at The Goddard School full-time for more than a year

ProsGood supportive company. This is a franchise. The owner of my school was very is to work for and family friendly while also business minded.

ConsStaff turnover. Sometimes very long hours when short staffed and no subsitites.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf offering a higher pay rate is not an option to retain staff maybe offering better benefits like tuition assistance would attract better quality teachers/teacher aides and reduce staff turnover. That will also make the parents and children happier.

Good company to work for... if you have a good owner

Assistant Teacher (Former Employee)

I worked at The Goddard School full-time for more than 5 years

ProsHigh standards - the corporate office really cares about the quality of education they are providing, clean environment - team environment - great families

ConsSince they are a franchised company - the owners make all the difference in a good school or a terrible one. Goddard corporate does have a quality assurance program to make sure kids are getting the care they need but not every school tries to follow Goddard ratios when QA isn't there and some states have much higher ratios!

The 1st Goddard I worked out was a wonderful school - of course the teachers there had complaints - but they were relatively small compared to what I experienced later. I love my job at this Goddard, the directors and owner/on site operator all had years of experience in the classroom and really tried to help teachers work through anything is they were having a hard time with. The staff was great (everyone didn't get along all of the time but I don't think that possible in a building full of women) .

I loved that job so much I sought out a Goddard to work at when I moved to another state. This 2nd Goddard was an entirely different animal than the first! The owners did not have a background in education but wanted to be involved in the daily operation. Goddard has a philosophy of learning through play - we are supposed to provide materials and allow the children to freely explore them with some group time during the day. This owner couldn't stand to walk past a room and have it be loud or messy. When you allow 1-3 year olds to freely explore their environment it is going to be loud...it is going to be messy. This owner didn't care for the Goddard philosophy she wanted to see mostly group time with a little bit of play. She wanted to walk by the rooms and hear what she thought learning sounded like and see what see thought it looked it - kids sitting around their teacher, eyes peeled on her and the teacher singing - or reading a book. Some of these kids are there from 6:30- 6:00 they are not going to sit and listen all day! They also didn't always follow Goddard ratios so we were expected to maintain the orderly school appearance she wanted with more kids than Goddard recommends per teacher. No one has happy there.

This school had a high turnover ratio for teachers and directors.

Advice to Senior ManagementI suggest conducting anonymous surveys with staff to see how effective your franchisees are.

The Goddard School was full of excellent and devoted teachers.

Teacher (Former Employee)

I worked at The Goddard School full-time for more than a year

ProsThe teachers at the Goddard School were dedicated and attentive to all children that attended & the families were a joy to work for.

ConsThe school was often understaffed and had a high turn over rater- I believe this was due to the pay being so low that it was difficult to keep the best & most qualified teachers around for too long.

Enriching & Rewarding.

Assistant Teacher (Former Employee)

I worked at The Goddard School full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat co-workers, great management, great families. Every day was different and pretty face paced. Good benefits and vacation time.

ConsThe discipline policies are very ineffective, especially when you have a challenging child. Also, for how hard you work and how much you invest into the children and their families, the pay feels awfully low (even though Goddard pays great for a child-care center).

Advice to Senior ManagementThe philosophy of discipline that the school holds is very outdated and ineffective. They need to implement better polices for the continued health and development of children who struggle behaviorally.

Co-Lead Teacher Get-Set Room

Co-Lead Teacher (Former Employee)

I worked at The Goddard School full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe Owner, Director and established cirriculum were all excellent resources. I really felt like I had an advocate in my wing should any problems arise. There is a very clear concise program so you are always aware of where you stand in terms of job performance. The company is very organized and easy to navigate.

ConsThe pay is extremely low for the amount of time and effort required to do an excellent job. I found myself putting in a lot of hours of work "off the clock". As with any pre-school job it is important to be aware that you do not get burnt out.
