    Creativity and Innovation Not Welcome

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

    ProsSteady, secure job
Pay is good and hours are generally not overwhelming
There will always be a need for The Hartford's services as mandated by the Federal Government

    ConsLimited advancement opportunity
    Overwhelming, inflexible bureaucracy
Still using Microsoft Office 2003 in 2013
    Childish office politics
Focus is on the process, not the result
Innovation is a foreign concept and actively discouraged

Advice to Senior ManagementAdherence to a corporate/business mindset that seems to remain relatively unchanged, at least philosophically, since the 1980’s is not a good way to attract/retain young talent.

Started off well, but became much more depressing over the years! Severe lack of direction and focus.

    Senior Business Analyst (Former Employee)
    Windsor, CT

ProsThe Hartford was once the envy of the insurance industry - an old institution, loyal to its employees, etc. They didn't overpay, but they also didn't lay workers off, so one traded potential for security. Brand name used to be excellent, as was its integrity.

ConsIn my 12 years with The Hartford, everything that used to be true changed. The economy tanked, and the company couldn't decide what its position in the market was. Huge numbers of employees were let go. Large parts of their business were sold. What used to be a proud institution was in shambles. The stock was worth nothing. And there was no clear direction. And since the recession hit, the situation has really improved very little. Nobody I know there is very happy, or secure in their role. It's really a shame.

Advice to Senior ManagementWithout a doubt, employees aren't treated anywhere near the way they should be. Many upper level management ran departments without clear direction or support. As obvious as it sounds, as long as you remain in business, you will HAVE to recognize your people. Listen to them. Give them direction, but show empathy and support. The human side of The Hartford is severely lacking in all of the above.

A good place to start, but not a great place to stay

    Assistant Director (Former Employee)
    Hartford, CT

ProsDecent salary and met some very nice people while employed here.

ConsChaotic environment (outsourcing) with very little opportunity to grow. Finance is always in clean-up mode. Management talks the talk, but doesn't walk the walk. Very poor work life balance as a result of constantly having to re-engineer processes because of a disorganized approach to project work and poor management decisions; with a lack of management support to the individuals having to deal with the aftermath.

Advice to Senior ManagementNepotism is running rampant in the Finance areas. Too bad, because a lot of talented, committed and highly qualified talent is being lost. Change is necessary, but take a more thoughtful and organized approach. Give more rewards and recognition to employees in the business areas who are guiding and correcting the mistakes of the project team. Offer an environment where talented and dedicated individuals can grow and thrive.

    It was ok

    Claims (Former Employee)
    Lake Mary, FL

ProsLoved my coworkers, location was great, good pay and benefits

ConsBasic corporate politics. Setting unattainable goals and expecting the employees to be robots.

Lack of direction as a company

    Team Leader (Current Employee)
    Bloomington, MN

Pros401k match and stock plan. Flexible schedule. Slowly improving technology. Middle management is understanding of upper managements limitations and lack of direction. Opportunities to move laterally.

ConsPoor pay structure relative to industry competitors, salaried employees are expected to work 10+ hours of unpaid overtime weekly, poor work/life balance. Poor management. Every detail of your day is micromanaged to the most extreme measures, no trust in base level employees. Limited growth opportunities.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart trusting your employees rather than attempting to control their every move. Give people time off that is actual time off, not just your work piling up on their desk during their absence. Pay people what they are worth, not the minimum you can to keep them on board.

Terrible pay and an extremely high turnover rate.

ProsI can't think of one pro.

Sales, Not what was promised at all in the interview

    Sales Associate (Current Employee)
    Santee, CA

ProsThe people are very nice, I must give them that. I would say that just about everyone is very nice and willing to help, however, the managers aren't always knowledgeable enough to actually help.

ConsThey promise working from home and no Saturday's after a short period, along with these huge bonuses. That is not reality. The bonuses are very poor and no one from my class has been moved remote or taken off Saturday's. We've been there over two years and it was all a big carrot to get you in there.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe honest with people in the interviews and it would save you from having to keep hiring to cover all the people leaving.

Hard work with little pay off

    Ability Analyst (Current Employee)
    Maitland, FL

ProsGreat pay and steady hours. The Hartford does appear to want to develop your skills in the business world.

ConsAnxiety infested work environment. Most people in the call center and group benefits department don't last due to the amount of stress in the work place.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake work loads more manageable.

    Claims Adjuster

    Claims Adjuster (Former Employee)
    Indianapolis, IN

ProsI received a very nice compensation package and great bonuses my first two years.

ConsThe service of the Claims Rep, Adjuster and Company as a whole are considered when the customer completes the survey. Yet the entire weight of the survey rest solely on the rep. If the customer is upset with the adjuster or company rates they are able to score that on the survey under the representative. Unrealistic expectations for reps. Just to maintained worked through my lunch and breaks and sometimes off the clock. Always of being fired for production

Advice to Senior ManagementReview your customer survey policy.
