    This place is a nightmare

    I worked at The Hartford

    Pros

I'm still thinking. I guess there's something but not coming to mind. Things are not what they appear.

    Cons

Don't let them fool you, these people are always partying so yeah eventually you do work hard. Training was awful. Trainer was too busy gossiping and wasting time so a lot of training was cut out. Call coaches would gossip and tell stories about your classmates. Call coaches grade with their mood, not objectively. Made the mistake of asking for help, didn't get it. I should be sorry I'm not there anymore, but I'm just not.

    Advice to Management

The real joke is on you. 90% of my class and classes after mine are completely miserable. Make training much more like the real experience.

    Pros

None, a mistake to go there from day 1

    Cons

While home recovering from a heart attack and by-pass surgery, I was told I was being fired because I had not been there long enough to be entitled to long-term disability. I was told this on a conference call with my wife also on the line. Suddenly someone on their said took them off the the line and they 'would allow me stay ...", our guess was the lawyers told them I would have a 7-figure law suit ready in a week. SLIME! I feel like I need a shower even talking about them

    Advice to Management

Awful, horrible people. Shame on all of you.

    Pros

Competitive salary, excellent 401k program will match up to 6% of employee contribution, generous paid time off.

    Cons

Fast-paced high pressure job. I was constantly getting sick working here. If you take too many sick days they will write you up. Not much work/life balance with working 10-7 and weekends. You have to stay in "ready mode" on your phone until the minute your shift ends. If you have an incoming call at 6:59, too bad. You could be stuck working another 1/2 hour to an hour later than when your shift should have ended. The first 2 years I worked in Customer Service for the auto and home department. I was constantly being yelled at my the customers all day long. As soon as 1 call ends they expect you to immediately take the next call. They basically want emotionless robots to do this job, not humans. After being burned out from 2 years of taking 60 + phone calls per day I switched to the sales department where they have impossible metrics to meet. After working in sales for a year many employees either quit or were fired. Since I was having to take a lot more phone calls but not meeting their sales expectations I was forced out with a severance package. At that point I welcomed it since I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Management favors certain employees and targets others. They actually would rather hire new employees at a lower salary than keep on the long term employees that have experience.

    Advice to Management

Work with your employees to help them instead of forcing them out of their jobs.

    Pros

The spaces in the parking lot are wide.

    Cons

When I see reviews here that say "upper management really listens ", I immediately know it's a fake planted review. The main reason morale is so low, and the reason I left is bc senior management DOESN'T listen. They're good at holding meetings to brag about the company, and they do plenty of employee surveys, but it's all for show. For my first 10 years, The Hig was really a great place to work, but starting then, the entire supportive atmosphere changed into a metric driven culture where management wanted only what was good for the department they managed. Cooperation? Collaboration? Teamwork? Are you kidding?? ? Look at The Hartford as a series of island, separated by water. Towers are built on those islands to keep the people from other islands away, and drawbridges are never in the down position. Need something from your island? Good. Need to collaborate with another island? You better be a good swimmer, bc those drawbridges never come down. And guess how many times you'll be working on something which requires resources from another island? 98% of your time. Make sure you bring your high blood pressure medication, bc you will need it 10 hours every day.

The Hartford never wants to be a leader. Management freely admits they'd rather be "quick followers". Maybe that wouldnt be so bad if they really were 'quick' but they just aren't. That's their culture, so if you have ambition, this would be career hell for you. If you just want to poor along, and stay under the radar with your head down, then this is the place for you.

What a shame that they've fallen so far.

    Pros

Great coworkers, casual attire and... That's pretty much it .

    Cons

I should start by saying that I read a lot of reviews here before taking this job 2 years ago and they were definitely not as bad as they are now! In my interview this job was described as something really important, that you will be acting as an investigator and have many important responsibilities. Soon after I realized it's really just a call center job and your opinion on anything doesn't matter and you have no input. Everything is micromanages, the company lives by their precious metrics which are impossible to achieve with the workload we have.
I have stressed so much over this job my first year that I had gotten my self physically sick and had to take medical leave, which they were of course not happy about. I had applies for 4 different positions within the company only to find myself rejected to all of them. Then, current RVP calls me for a talk to explain to me that I didn't get promoted because our PDO department is always understaffed! So... You can work as hard as you want, get yourself sick over it and still don't get promoted because the claims department is understaffed and they just can't take you out of it.
Oh, to all the people saying you could work from home, FALSE! I have been begging for that for 2 years and have been rejected for any reason out there.
I could continue this review but you get the gist. If you read all the other reviews here you understand that you should definitely stay away from the claims department at the Hartford.

    Advice to Management

None because they won't listen to small fish like us. I got another job and have never been happier in my life (it has nothing to do with claims)!

    Pros

Very difficult to have anything positive to say about this company. It is VERY VERY VERY old school. Very slow to move on anything, horrible communication between managers and little communication with employees. What is communicated is extremely filtered and makes everything look rosy when it's really not at all.

    Cons

Don't bother working here unless you A. work in the state of Connecticut, B. are a pedigreed Connecticut blueblood or C., can deal with unemotional, egotistical and selfish people at all levels of the organization.
