ProsHonestly, this was the most awful job I've ever had especially when considering opportunity, pay, and benefits. It's soul crushing.

ConsThe crushing boredom is awful. Standing in one spot for over eight hours is mind numbing torture. Customers treat you with contempt, and there is no hope for a promotion, except for more responsibility with no extra pay. You are not a person to this company, you are an expense.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your employees like real people, and pay them a fair wage.

    No Chance of Work-Life Balance

Operations Manager (Former Employee) Romeoville, IL

ProsCompensation for the position is fair if the hours worked were closer to industry standard. Unfortunately in the building I worked at the hours were much greater than the standard 55 hours or lower.

ConsMinimum work weeks of 65 hours and not uncommon to work 5-6 14+ hour days. Extremely high turnover of management. No support from HR or Sr. Leaders. Held to extremely unrealistic goals for daily business metrics (far exceeding stretch goals).

Advice to Senior ManagementSupport your distribution leadership teams by developing policies and standard practices. Enforce those policies and practices consistently and structure the business more closely to the industry standard for work-life balance. Develop a culture where your associates are proud to work for The Home Depot.

    So bad I quit!!!

    Cashier (Former Employee) Inglewood, CA

ProsThey train you for almost everything you will encounter, they offer benefits to full time employees (working 40+ hours a week EVERY WEEK), the overall benefits and associate discounts (not in the store) are nice, but there's always the alumni program to continue getting associate discounts.

ConsEverything!!! Maybe it was just my location, but they wouldn't let me relocate to a different store so I'm not too sure. They offer a befefits package to full time employees, but everyone I met in the store (I always make it a point to learn who all of my coworkers are and what they do) worked less than 40 hours a week every week so no one qualified except the managers. Management sucked, they tell you if you have a problem to go through the chain of command meaning your immediate supervisor, then the department head, then your assistant store manager, then the store manager, and finally corporate. I had to call corporate for about 5 different things in the 5 months I had worked there. When you request days off, don't expect to get them, because even if they are approved they will still schedule you anyway and if you call and tell them about it, it's a call off. If you don't come (which is what you will typically do if you get an approval for a request to take the day off) you're a no call no show, and you're penalized for it. I got sick and was hospitalized for 2 days so I called in and told the manager what was happening on the first day. Now my doctor told me to stay on bed-rest the next 3 days, and then I could return to work. The manager told me to just bring in a doctor's note explaining everything and excusing me from work. So I come back after 5 days note in hand and I am turned away and told I cant return to work without a leave of absence packet (about 20 pages of paperwork) filled out by myself and my doctor. Mind you a leave of absence is only required if you will miss a minimum of 10 days of work, i missed 5. My doctor could not fill out the packet because she did not place me on a leave of absence and she would be penalized by her superiors if they found out, so i understood. The Home Depot Store 1010 would not let me return and all the while kept putting me down as a no call no show, and threatened to fire me for job abandonment, so I told them I quit and hung up. Needless to say I don't even shop at The Home Depot anymore. I've been happier since I left.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo the management at store 1010.....Listen to your employees, and at least act like you care about them. Hopefully things will turn around for the better.

Special Services Associate (Current Employee) Alsip, IL

ProsNot many pros to this company they are very unfair to the works they over hire and under pay they over look experience and take favoritism to the maximum.

ConsUnfair management, had work but light pay. they give very little hours and when they do give hours they usually give a large un bearable work load.

    Bad management

    Accountant (Current Employee) Atlanta, GA

ProsGood work life balance for majority of the time

ConsLeadership is awful and the fault always comes down to the people on the bottom of the totem pole. There's a culture of favoritism in place and unfortunately if you're not in with the right people, you're either forced out or life becomes so miserable that you'd rather quit without a job than to continue working. Everyone is definitely not held to the same standards. The bad reputation rumors about the company in the market are definitely true.
