I have been working at The Ohio State University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are amazing. Medical plans are better than anywhere else I've worked, and you can take classes for free. Flexible schedule and work-life balance. Intellectual atmosphere and lots of engagement.

    Cons

No clear career path for staff. Parking is outrageous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on creating upward mobility for staff members. Good people will leave if there's no place for them to develop their talents and ambitions.

I worked at The Ohio State University as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

    Not a ton of pressure.
    People are friendly.
    Intellectual Environment
Easy to find housing near campus, especially in the summer, allowing you to walk to work.
Plenty of bars, movie theaters, parks in walking distance.
    Casual dress code.

    Cons

Pay is low compared to internships in industry.
Can be difficult to get supervisor's attention when getting started a research position...not every adviser has a plan for your development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure when you have summer research assistants that you are very clear on what the project is trying to accomplish and how the student is supposed to get up to speed.

I have been working at The Ohio State University full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Professional staff, access to many resources, very good benefits, discounts for employees; overall, it's by far not the worst university you could work for!

    Cons

Due to outsourcing, it can be challenging to deal with the multiple departments that handle important daily aspects, such as parking, for instance.

I have been working at The Ohio State University part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The department provides excellent training and support for teaching assistants, which transfers to the academic job market. Good faculty mentors, but you must seek them out.

    Cons

Relatively heavy teaching loads which cut into research/writing time a bit more than I'd like. However, the load is not unreasonable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Graduate associate should have more say in their pay/benefit negotiations.

    Pros

ElectroScience Laboratory has a flexible environment, where there are many opportunities to get involved in ground-breaking research. The professors are very knowledgeable and willing to assist in any ways possible.

    Cons

There is a tendency for politics to occur between researchers, professors, or outside institutions. It is important to find ways to steer away from such issues so one is not affected.
