I worked at The Pantry full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Able to move up quickly. Went from assistant manager to district manager in five years. Decent benefits. Great training from upper management

    Cons

Long hours. Holidays were spent here. No respect for loyalty. Just recently bought out by a larger company and many changes are coming.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communication is horrible. When someone is loyal to you please be aware that you should respect that. I grew a lot and I thank you for the opportunity you gave me. I watched a lot of people lose their jobs.

    Pros

Working with the public, pay pretty well, Benefits are good

    Cons

Unreasonable expectations of employees sometimes. As a management employee you are expected to be on call 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Their main concern are the numbers not the relationship with staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate with your staff. Treat them like they are people.

I have been working at The Pantry full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Paid weekly, meet cool customers/coworkers/managers from other stores. Paid time off (if you can actually schedule it)

    Cons

Underpaid, impossible to find decent employees that want part time, very small labor hours given to employees, rude customers, no personal life. District managers and up only seem to care about less important things.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to pay more for people that slave away for the company, need to give more labor hours to the store level to meet the outrageous standards especially in stores that are only single coverage.

I have been working at The Pantry full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent pay, and had I personally had a great District Manager and Regional Sales Director. Once you had a good team the store basically ran itself. Fairly simple expectations from corporate. Great comradery with other managers.

    Cons

Finding and training a good team is extremely hard; not many "great" employees are lining up to work at a gas station. Long hours, the norm is about fifty but it was not uncommon to work up to seventy and sometimes not get a day off for multiple weeks. Sometimes corporate would have a "great idea" that they would hand down unfinished or completely broken and leave the stores to sort out the mess.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote the good people quickly before they get away. Adopt a small floating cashier/sales team for each district that include 1 or 2 floating assistant managers, to cover when the inevitable call outs or no-notice terminations take place.

    Cons

focus on the employees who have worked for the company for numerous years instead of hiring part time employees so you can offer less pay and no benefits.

Corporate Office Employee Underpayment Is This Company's Policy

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Cary, NC

I worked at The Pantry full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The organization's flexibility of working with your work -life schedule.
Openess to accept new ideas as well as implementation of those ideas. The company's processes and procedures are outdated and they now realize to remain competive they must incorporate a higher caliber employee.
Overall respectfull work enviroment especially now that a new CEO has arrived.

    Cons

The company makes it a practice to under pay/compensate their employees regardless of performance. If you are thinking about becoming a part of this organization negotiate salary, benefits, and vacation upfront.
Software, policy, practices, and procdeures are outdated even though now there are trying to come into the present.
A lot of the managment aren't as knowledgable in their field as they should be.
The company handbook is too open ended. Alot is left to managerial discretion which opens the company to neopotism or favortism issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fairly compensate your employees to retain your talent versus talented individuals using this organization as a temporary lay over until something better comes along.
Human Resources needs to create a real handbook and don't leave so much up to managerial discretion.
