UPS Store Associate of NY Feedback

UPS Store Clerk (Former Employee) New York, NY

ProsI was able to balance going to school and working to pay for it. My manager was flexible with my fluctuating schedule at times. The Hours and schedule were very steady and I learned how to work quickly and efficently while building other skills that I still utilize today. We recived small bonuses for generating large revenues. Lunch when we did over a $1000 on a Sunday and commissions.

ConsThe owner of my franchise had some of the longest hours I' ve seen any UPS store owner have opening at 8:00am and closing at 9PM some locations and we were open Sundays. ALso when it got busy for the Christmas season, we could have used more employees which we didn't get. Also, for the amount of work the UPS Stores do in NY, I felt we should be paid more. Also, although we are a franchise they should offer some bonus to employees of franchises..Tuition reimbursement something.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey should offer discounts for opening franchises to employees of franchises and UPS Store corporate employees.

As far as retail goes, this is the most tolerable experience I've had.

Mailbox Manager, Certified Packing Expert (Former Employee) Brighton, Monroe, NY

ProsThe stores are franchised so it really depends on your store's owner or manager. At my store my starting pay was 10/hr and within a year I was at 11.50/hr. I got all the hours I wanted and the work wasn't too difficult but not boringly easy either. I stayed for a year and went back to help out a couple times the following summer. Great college job. Not just packing and shipping, there's also expansive printing services and lots of other things. Store owners are given leeway toward services and stock so some stores are specialized in printing, another may be in mailboxes, another may be in shipping or some combinations of things.

ConsLike I said, the stores are franchised. I've heard some nightmarish stories about managers at stores in neighboring towns. Christmas gets really intense with packing and shipping but some stores give bonuses to their employees after. I did not get my bonus. Our store manager got new furniture for her new apartment. Things started going downhill after that but I stayed til I transferred schools.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't let just anyone purchase and run one of your franchises would be my best advice. Or at least make sure the area guys that check on each store are speaking up.

    The Ups Store-Certified Packing Expert

Certified Packing Expert Or Retail Associate (Current Employee) Amarillo, TX

ProsCan be very flexible. Can work overtime during peak seasons. "Ok" bonuses during Christmas. You learn something new almost everyday so it's kind of exciting(specially if your at a busy store). I work at a busy store so time flies by. This job allows you to build great relationships with customers as well as box holders.

ConsThe pay is not too great. The job provides NO benefits. This job is an individual franchise so hours, days/times you have to work can be a pain sometimes; at times you can actually get a call to come to work at the last minute even if your supposed to be off or come in later, whatever the situation is. This job can be very overwhelming at times.

    Manager

Assistant Manager (Former Employee) Boston, MA

ProsWorking close with owners. Learn the fundamentals of running your own business. Use your skills and knowledge you learn to start a career in shipping logistics. Requires being a great problem solver.

ConsTerrible pay for managers. Dead end job. No room for advancement.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo owners that do not work in their own centers. Take a week and work hand in hand with your employee's once in a while. Find out how much they are worth and who this job is not suited for. It is your business, PROTECT IT.

Simple work that sometimes gets frustrating and tedious

Assistant Manager (Current Employee) Worcester, MA

ProsEasy work, corporate interactions are simple, can have very quiet days depending on your location

ConsPay (mediocre hourly), know it all customers, some prices are hard to up-sell versus competitors (FedEx, USPS).

Advice to Senior ManagementRespond to FedEx and USPS' pricing, especially flat-rate.

This job has been a good stepping stone, but there is no room for growth.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsIt's way better than just working at McDonalds. You have opportunity to gain experience in data entry, office administration, and inventory management, though it is a retail job.

ConsThe UPS Store is a franchise, so every store is operated differently, and they are all considered small businesses. Some owners will be better than others. Be prepared to do more than just packaging and shipping. Also, don't expect to be full time with benefits.

Advice to Senior ManagementYour UPS Store employees should be focusing on their job, and not on side projects for store owners.
