    Pros

Worked at the Pittsburgh office, where I was supervised by reasonable, fair people for most of my day-to-day work. Resources for the work I was assigned were generally available, and assignments given to me generally came with clear instructions or room for me to use my own judgment.

    Cons

Thermo Fisher expects an intensity from its employees that turns work-life balance upside down. At one point in my department of a few dozen people, only two of us had school-age children. The rest were singles or parents of older kids. It's a great place to start a career--lots of chances to build skills and make contacts--but maybe not the place for you if you are building a family.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seriously address work-life balance. Letting an employee take laptop home for the weekend can't be the extent of flexibility in this department. I loved the work I was doing, but my hours were becoming untenable.

    Pros

    great paycheck,
mostly a good colleagues to work among

    Cons

Management has little regard for direct reports work-life balance.
You can never say "NO" even if your health, family & life is being adversely affected; It will cost you your career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

improve overall work-life balance by vacation carry-over
Service contracts for Aria have no typical consumables exclusions; Burlington, NC R&D management customers are severely taking advantage of this and ruin service contract profit margin. Thermo management is knowing allowing this abuse. They with Thermo Management are also vilifying any FSE that supports them, so... New or any FSE BEWARE !!!

    Pros

A transnational company that mandates a standardized process improvement training to promote understanding and communication among colleagues. This is extremely critical for a company that grows by merger and acquisitions.

    Cons

Company adopts LEAN management like most companies. Consequently, projects are behind because of inadequate resources and unrealistic milestones.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In order to maintain the industry leadership position in scientific instrument, Supply Chain should focus on quality not costs.

Major company growth within the organization and industry

    Cons

    - Inexperienced Leadership
    - Corporate Politics

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Depending on what level you are at, it can be great, but not every level (BU/Division/Corporate) has experience as to what the Sites actually do. Misguiding because they dont really understand business units.

Location: Rochester, NY: Employee loyalty has disappeared due to management cut throat work ethics.

    Pros

Once was a very enjoyable work environment

    Cons

If you are not a managers goofier your doomed. Long term employees are dismissed with no reasonable reason and forced to sign a disclaimer to not sue or in some cases never apply to another Thermo Fisher Scientific organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

listen to the employees and react to some of there dislikes in a positive manner verses laying them off.

Former Employee - Senior Software Engineer  in  Austin, TX
Former Employee - Senior Software Engineer in Austin, TX

    Pros

Good salary and benefits, with reasonable hours (at least for my team). I liked the people I worked with. The application domain (Gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer) was very interesting. Profitable and stable company.

    Cons

Software is still an appendage to hardware. software teams are splintered into small teams for each hardware line. Some poor coordination and mutual distrust between sites. Lots of process and politics to get anything done. Much energy was expended on looking good in meetings and to bosses. In process terms, they combine the worst features of agile and waterfall development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consolidate software organizations and appoint technical architects with the authority to kill bad products and force use of common standards and software. Hire some experienced, successful software leaders and really implement agile. Software teams need the power to refuse unreasonable requests. Cut back on meetings. Be realistic in estimates and scheduling.
