Fast-paced, but rewarding

Product Manager (Current Employee)
Frederick, MD

I have been working at Thermo Fisher Scientific full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThe pace is extremely fast and a lot is expected of you. Expect to take on multiple projects but get rewarded handsomely for success

ConsManagement sometimes out of touch with how to move fast and what's possible in a big company. If there are barriers in the way, you are expected to do the heavy lifting to remove them. Disconnect in goals between operations and business makes this difficult.

Advice to Senior ManagementRemove the barriers from a higher level. Do not expect junior staff to take on big problems because often they do not have the influence or authority to do so.

Great Place to Work

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Thermo Fisher Scientific

ProsGreat people, great environment, low stress work place. There were tasks in many fields I got to partake in which was nice. Learned alot about engineering and management.

ConsThere really were not many cons. The plant I worked at was quite small. The people in the lab worked together while the engineer was off to the side. It would be nice to have more interaction at work.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere can be too many leaders and no followers. Managers need to know when to listen to other managers when its not their field of expertise.

Global Product Manager

Global Product Manager (Current Employee)
Asheville, NC

I have been working at Thermo Fisher Scientific full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood comp, smart mgt, good hours 40-50, fair vacation policy, and upward mobility for MBA's and high potentials. International travel. New exciting acquisition - Life Technologies. The new addition could offer new, interesting opportunity.

ConsLofty performance goals which make getting an outsized bonus very difficult. Not youthful. Growth outpaces processes and headaches are many - lot of legacy companies/acquisitions still working themselves out. Other standard gripes of working for the man. Manufacturing company with a number of tough locations.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire some fresh talent. Work to improve processes beyond manufacturing initiatives. Update the offices please:)

Growth Potential with a large company

Sourcing Specialist (Current Employee)
Milwaukee, WI

I have been working at Thermo Fisher Scientific full-time for more than 8 years

ProsThe work is interesting. New products that do benefit medical and environmental needs. There is a large potential to grow the site and can use this small site to launch career into a corporate level if so desired.

ConsForced ranking system. Quality systems has too big of an influence over new ideas and products

Advice to Senior ManagementHire more people for key roles including manufacturing and Quality Control. Would look to align more internal business quickly with new acquired companies.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Thermo Fisher Scientific full-time for more than 3 years

Good company to work for, but it is HUGE (and feels even bigger).

Product Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Thermo Fisher Scientific full-time for more than 10 years

ProsSecure company, secure jobs. Lots of jobs to apply for internally if you want. Most groups are high technology oriented. Very global focused, global experience is simple to find.

ConsHuge company, tonnes of bureaucracy. Moves slow. Little accountability for problem employees. Productive people can get buried in paperwork that managers ask for.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake people accountable. Identify the always-poor performers and make necessary corrections.
Single out the high-performers and empower them to make changes quickly - they'll get stuff done faster than any PPI team.
Break down the countless walls of bureaucracy.
