I worked at Thermo Fisher Scientific full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very high employee loyalty. It is not unusual for employees to stay on throughout their careers.
As company as grown through acquisitions many more positions are available for employees with an R&D focus and science backgrounds. Thermo Fisher Has two main focuses, manufacturing of a wide variety of science and technology related products, and a very large international distribution company selling it's own as well as others products.
International company with lots of opportunity for growth and travel providing you have the experience and training to take on roles of that type.
For those who have a scientific bent this is a good company to work for, since it is closely allied with science, technology and healthcare internationally.
Benefits and salaries are in line and probably a little better than is the case in the marketplace. Bonuses and stock options at the management level.

    Cons

As the company has grown, and especially since the merger between Fisher Scientific and Thermo Electron, the culture has become very bottom line focused. The old school, close knit family environment still exists but has been supplanted by the needs of a Fortune 500 environment. Staff level employees are well treated, but the higher you get in management the greater the pressure and, despite the stated goal of the company, the less work life balance. However this is by no means unique for a company of this size.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

While Thermo Fisher has performed very well and it's stock price has grown consistently, the work life balance of many employees, especially in the management ranks, has suffered due to work load and concentration on the bottom line. Since younger workers have been raised on a culture emphasizing work life balance this could be detrimental to talent acquisition.

I worked at Thermo Fisher Scientific as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Fantastic people. Leadership was handling big changes very well. Great pay. Many opportunities to work on projects that fit my interests and experience. Fast paced environment.

    Cons

The office was terribly understaffed while I was there; it was right after the divestiture with GE (they took the majority of the employees from this location) so everyone was incredibly stressed out trying to get everything done. They were hiring on more people when I left, though.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This location just needs more employees in the office to help get everything done, but I know that's already a work in progress. Everything I saw was positive in the way of taking care of employees and making positive changes.

    Cons

The management team seems inexperienced, and the company likes to hire young people to replace senior workers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

good name recognition, lot of internal opportunities, cross training available, benefits. wide network of coworkers and ex-employees that are willing to refer you to different position. overall great place for a new graduate to start working

    Cons

lack of communication between upper management, mid levels, and supervisor level. company too big and broad, no real accountability and focus. definitely many employees doing the minimum to stay employed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

less redundancy, clarify and streamline individual job duties and responsibilities, keep hard working employees, let the bad ones go

I have been working at Thermo Fisher Scientific full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Smart and likeable people overall. Feels good to know you are working for a company that has direct impact on healthcare and medical research. Company compensates well (at least the legacy Life Tech side).

    Cons

Not enough information sharing. Very siloed. There is no cohesive company "story" or mission to invigorate employees post-acquisition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lead by example, be more transparent, and develop your people. Ask them what they want to do and give them the tools to make it happen without micromanaging.
