Management at Toll Brothers

IT Professional (Current Employee)
Horsham, PA

I have been working at Toll Brothers

ProsThe department that I work in is understanding of family first. This is very important for someone such as myself that has young, school aged children.

ConsManagement, management and management. Upper management needs to understand the effects of technology on the business they manage. This is 2008 and we do not use pencil and paper anymore. They need to start respecting our jobs more.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart respecting the people that keep the company running and keep up with new advances in technology in the field.

Okay

Marketing Coordinator (Current Employee)

I have been working at Toll Brothers full-time for more than 5 years

ProsI can definitely say that their benefits are better than other companies for sure. There are some perks for working there. We can get employee discounts for various things. They have flexible hours, which is a bonus.

ConsLong hours and untrained HR staff when it comes to dealing with employee issues. Some staff are required to stay extra hours for the Monday night meetings which are unpaid.

Leadership is hard to come by.

Vice President (Former Employee)

I worked at Toll Brothers full-time for more than 10 years

ProsCompensation is adequate. Exposure to the world of home building is good.

ConsInspiration and the authority to do one's job is hard to come by. It's a fairly autocratic organization.

Advice to Senior ManagementI only provide advice to those I presume would use it.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Toll could do better in recognizing its employees, more communication, create a team environment

Project Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Toll Brothers

ProsToll gives you a great experience in learning all multifaceted task in the real estate industry. Project Managers are responsible for budgets, contracts, sales, marketing, ad customer satisfaction for their respective community. So the experience you gain is invaluable for your future.

ConsWith that experience comes a price. You will be expected to work 60+ hours a week even though that is not said to you directly. With the reporting that Toll requires and with today's market of being lean in the field, doing more reporting , and more micro managing it makes it difficult to be effective in your job on a consistent basis. Also when I was hired over 10 years ago it was about moving up in the company and had a nice competitive spirit. With this down turn in the economy, it seems that Toll has lost some of the positive reinforcement that they use to preach in the past. Now it is about survival and get it done with more critiquing than, getting a pat on the back from time to time. (Mind you this is on a Division Level and not necessarily on a national level)

Advice to Senior ManagementUpper management needs to be in more sync and together on a division level instead of individuals. Need to recognize and praise their employees, and be more of a positive reinforcement . Need to realize the employees you have work harder and like to come to work if they feel like they are more part of the process as a whole than just an employee.

Advice to Senior ManagementSay, "thank you" and mean it.

enter with open eyes

Project Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Toll Brothers

Prosorganization, field staff knowledge, deep pockets, marketing budget, on time sub payment = quick sub response

Conslong long hours, often unrealistic sales expectations, mid-level managements' desire to shine leads to forced fluffing of numbers, mid-level management lack of practical knowledge

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend more time on site and less time in the office (sales offices don't count). Talk to and listen to the construction managers. Windshield site reviews are never good.

Not the worst place to work....

Project Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Toll Brothers

ProsBuild a quality product
Free Golf
Work with some of the best subs
Good location
Corporate Entity/HQ very professional and decent

ConsManagement is too concerned with status and position
No mentorship whatsoever
Senior PMs are somewhat distant and disinterested in day to day operations
Lacks Leadership

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in your employees and develop them. Everyone either hates it there or loves it there and it all depends on whether you are in the PMs in-crowd, which is just poor leadership.

Toll Brothers PM

Project Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Toll Brothers

ProsPMs are given a lot of autonomy, great hands on real estate experience, blend of field and office work, promote from within mentality, decent pay, stable builder.

ConsLong hours (late monday nights), some weekend work, vastly different experiences based on your manager's style, workload can be very intense, a lot of customers have preconceived notion of builder - many voice their concerns..

Advice to Senior ManagementBreak out of big home on small lot mentality and expand the number of urban infill projects.
