I have been working at Towers Watson

    Pros

The company is doing very well, financially. The company continues to hire aggressively.

    Cons

It is very difficult to be promoted, especially if you are at a lower level.

I have been working at Towers Watson full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Decent compensation.
    Opportunities for advancement.
Recent acquisitions have helped up their technology game.
Senior management has a bold vision for the future and seem to be implementing it well.
    High quality work output.

    Cons

Little work/life balance and no real sympathy for those who want it.
Advancement opportunities are more difficult for those looking for alternative ways to do it - career paths are well-defined, but they risk losing people who haven't followed these well-worn paths.
My group has been understaffed for several years with no end in sight.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let people have a life outside the firm. Don't make them feel bad for using vacation time. Most importantly, adequately staff positions.

  3.

My time at Towers Watson was underwhelming and generally unsatisfactory.

I worked at Towers Watson as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

The people were very nice and accommodating. The company is well organized given the recent merge between Towers Perrin and Watson Wyatt.

    Cons

People weren't very competitive. The culture wasn't as aggressive and geared towards high-performance as I'd like.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management ought to formalize its hierarchy more so that assignments are clear and consistent. A more formalized training program also would be helpful and might lead the more senior people to delegate work more efficiently than they currently are.

I have been working at Towers Watson as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

The people were nice, friendly and helpful. But I interned in the data services team so my work almost entirely consisted of data cleaning which was boring. Thankfully, the manager of my team gave me an interesting industry research project to do on the side. I learned a lot from that project about market research, evaluating trends, and creating presentations and reports.

    Cons

Like I said, the work is pretty dull if you're roped in simply to work on data stuff, but you might be able to go to other teams and ask if you can help out with their work too.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a more enriching internship program

I have been working at Towers Watson full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

All the benefits of a large, global firm: many offices, many resources, lots of different kinds of work being done (most of it excellent)

    Cons

All the negatives of a large, global firm: systems are too inflexible, review process (particularly upward review process) is seriously flawed, difficult to get exceptions made for you (especially as concerns compensation)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Internal review process is seriously flawed; retention is an issue; attempts to create uniform systems across radically different lines of business are unlikely to be successful

    Pros

I have been working at Towers Watson

    Pros

    Entry-level compensation was generous.
Relocation assistance seems to be typically provided.
Bonuses and pay raises are no longer frozen.
Potential to learn a lot about the industry.

    Cons

Poor work/life balance well over 3/4ths of the year.
Bonuses do not offset the amount of time needed to actually get the bonus.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on improving retention. I find it unlikely that the most talented individuals are willing to put up with all of the cons of working there. In other words, you're constantly losing some of your best employees.

    Pros

    Knowledgable and helpful co-workers
    Good office location
Opportunity to learn something new every day
They are good about giving you requested time off
They pay in full for related industry classes

    Cons

    Lower than expected salary/bonus
Since the merger, the benefits appear to be getting worse

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give decent salary increases and bonuses to employees at all levels
    Communicate better with staff
Update the antiquated computer systems which appear to be from the 80's
