It's an entry level place to start a career in journalism.

Photo Editor (Former Employee)
Costa Mesa, CA

I worked at Tribune Company full-time for more than 8 years

ProsIt is a good place to gain experience for recent graduates. The coverage area provides for a variety of situations for young journalist to build their portfolios and develop skills.

ConsThe pay is below what the cost of living is for the area making it necessary to for some to have a second job. The editorial department is understaffed, forcing journalists to work longer hours. Staff is salary so there isn't overtime. Layoffs are common due to the nature of the newspaper business.

Unfulfilling, lack of direction, empty promises

Sales Representative (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at Tribune Company full-time for more than a year

ProsConsistent hours, full-time pay, downtown location

ConsLow pay. Tons of turnover, you are considered old if you have been there over 9 months. Lack of leadership and career advancement. There seemed to be a new process to help band-aid fix old processes. There never seemed to be a concrete solution with issues we had whether it be the system, working on the phones, or advancement in the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementSometimes less is more, especially considering management.

Crap crap and more crap

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
New Haven, CT

I worked at Tribune Company full-time for more than 5 years

ProsMet nice people there, nothing to do with the job. It was nice being downtown New Haven, nothing to do with the job. Oh, they payed for parking, that's one good thing, and once in a while they would hook you up with a gift card for a restaurant, which is good when you haven't had a raise in years yet prices go up.

ConsWere to start? the pay, was never that good, but then the raises stopped, and the workload increased. Poor management. They trained us to work on new equipment which allowed them to replace us eventually, not a nice thing to do. Tried to make the work environment as stuffy and corporate as possible.

Advice to Senior ManagementJust get rid of the paper, for the love of our city, it is not what it used to be, not even close, most work is outsourced to other places, (Hartford, orlando etc.) It has no local flavor anymore.

Low paying, unorganized place to work

Inbound Advertising Representative (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at Tribune Company

ProsYoung staff, cool people awesome building downtown

ConsPay is terrible, they add new markets which double and then triple your work, but they don't compensate you for it. Instruction is relayed from the top down to each level without ever asking what the people actually doing the work think.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop grading empployees based on 4 calls a month that require us to say certain things even if it has no relevance in the conversation taking place.
