    Great Product but Turnover is a major problem

    Human Resources Mgt (Former Employee) Newton, MA

    ProsFree lunches, free food and drinks almost all the time. Young, fast moving culture and a great office space, moving to an even bigger office in the future. Great product, trusted source of travel reviews, company is making money.

    ConsTurnover! It seems like most of the groups are being impacted by turnover, a lot of employees have left the company for greener pastures, the performance rating process and raise %'s being very low for a company that is very profitable, seems to be the common thread. The HR team is non-existent, adds no value to the employees or senior management, and has had more turnover than any other group at Trip, even the most senior leader of HR left along with the leader of compensation. Not sure Senior Mgt knows how bad the turnover problem actually is.

    Advice to Senior ManagementHire a consulting firm to determine the sources for all the turnover, outsource HR until a new team can be built from the ground up. Figure out the retention issue.

    Ruthless Corporate America

    Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee)

    ProsCompensation is good and the stock is on a tear. Good place to work if money is the motivation.

    ConsWork is not really interesting. You will work on a lot of one week tweak projects. Competitive culture. But also a culture of fear codified by a speed wins mantra. Management is cold and ruthless. Classic corporate America. The company will do well because of its ruthless attitude.

    Advice to Senior ManagementCouple of token social projects will not really hide the kind of company you really are.

    Continued Turnover

    Senior Recruiter (Current Employee) Newton, MA

    ProsFree snacks, free beer
    Great product, solid technology

    ConsSenior Mgt "strongly encouraging" current employees to write positive reviews on working at Trip. What? Isnt this how Trip makes money and depends on honest unbiased reviews?

    Advice to Senior ManagementOutsource the HR dept that is unprofessional, non-confidential, and adds zero value.
    Create a quarterly bonus program, that will help offset the mass exodus when employees collect their annual bonus.

    Dishonest, degrading and abrasive management

    Director (Current Employee) Newton, MA

    Pros- The company was better to work for when part of Expedia but there are few pros now.
    - If you like travel, it's a fun industry.
    - TripAdvisor tries really hard to recruit students and puts their best food forward for the summer interns with fun events and outings. It's a facade and it's not like that for the full time employees.

    Cons- Two thumbs down for senior management who runs the business in an unethical and abrasive manner
    - In reality, everyone, from junior to middle to senior management, is simply a puppet of the CEO
    - No focus on career development
    - Junior staff is cocky and is starting to mirror senior management's style of yelling and degrading others. These are kids who are 0-2 years out of school
    - Location. Newton?

    Advice to Senior ManagementStop pretending to be a small start up company who can move in a quick and agile way. Understand who we've become and where we're going. Also, if you want to hire talented engineers, why would you move further west from Newton? Probably because that's where senior management live. Expect a lot of attrition to happen when the office moves.

    Sounded good during pre-hire

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Newton, MA

    ProsThe benefits are good and salary is a bit above normal for average positions. On surface, they appear to care about quality of your work environment and present growth may interfere with that and is understandable when it suffers a bit. If you are an engineer you are all set here.

    ConsA lot of unprofessional "blame gaming" going on with management and departments.
    Honestly some of the most unfriendly/hostile management I've ever encountered. The HR people who should be the nicest are some of the worst! Apparently it is more important to blame than it is to assess and resolve problems. I'm seeing some good people take pressure for situations beyond their control.

    Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your employees! We know where the problems come from and you should trust our experience and expertise. Sometimes it more important to listen and fix problems instead of trying to cover your own "jobs".

    Decent company taking a turn for the worse

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Newton, MA

    Pros- used to have great benefits but since the company spun off from Expedia, benefits aren't as good
    - exciting projects depending upon the department you are in
    - catered lunches are great, especially considering how remote the office is from a city center or restaurants

    Cons- company is growing too quickly and doesn't have adequate space for employees. They are currently in the process of doubling up employees into shared cubes.
    - attrition is high. a number of key roles have high turn over so it can be challenging to make progress. it seems like this trend is getting worse.
    - travel benefits and discounts recently ended.
    - zero career path and no ability to change departments/explore other roles at TA. your manager has to give you permission to apply for a new position internally so talented people choose to leave instead.
    - ask your co-workers if they want to hang out after work. they can't they are working. what are you doing tonight? working! If you like working 24-7, you will love working at TA!
    - the location is not desirable and makes for a challenging commute. unfortunately this also limits hiring since most people in the area want to work in Boston or Cambridge.
    - tools and reporting resources are not sufficient to support job requirements. very little is centralized and most tasks are manual.
    - the hacked together code base is a disorganized mess that the company is unwilling to put the time or resources into fixing.
    - company has recently become very conservative with expenses, travel, conferences, raises and bonuses. hopefully this will change.
    - depending upon your manager, you won't get to use a lot of the perks outlined during the interview process, like flex time, vacation (use it or lose it!), foosball, participating in social gatherings, etc.
    - it seems like most people not in upper management are doing the work of two people and when people go on vacation or quit there is no way to keep up.

    Advice to Senior Managementmove to new offices as soon as possible. give employees a clearer career path, more opportunities for advancement and the freedom to reasonably explore opportunities in other departments.

    Depends on what team you're joining, but overall probably wouldn't recommend it

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Newton, MA

    ProsI think there are a few really great things about TripAdvisor:
    * product people love
    * the great office space
    * food, snacks, fun events
    * kegerator

    ConsThere were a lot of reasons why I left. They included:
    * terrible middle-management layer (and in general, way too many layers in a company that small)
    * lots of opinions that muddle product development, nobody given proper responsibility for a product
    * some good process, but a lot of "one person made this mistake, so let's introduce this step to prevent it ever happening again" type of things
    * weird, "controlling" attitude. e.g. there is a foosball table, but people get in trouble for using it
    * lack of recognition for good work
    * micromanaging, and lots of it

    Advice to Senior ManagementSome new talent should hopefully continue to improve things but the existing culture needs to be changed

    Apparently was great to work at several years ago, now, not so much.

    Software Engineer (Current Employee) Newton, MA

    ProsCatered lunches 3 days a week which are actually pretty decent, nice office space, snacks, great product which people always love to talk to you about.

    ConsThere are some issues with senior and middle-management which make it a pretty uninspiring place to work. As mentioned in some other reviews, the product team seems the most affected, but engineering is also having some difficulties. In general, don't expect to have your hard work recognized, however the engineering team does seem to command a decent amount of respect.

    There have been multiple re-orgs in the last year, and there are definite favorites who are treated better than others regardless of their actual talent.

    It's also quite a rigid, waterfall development process, so if you want to work in a "startup like" environment, TripAdvisor isn't for you.

    Advice to Senior ManagementStop being oblivious to the middle management issues and work at improving the company culture. Try learning lessons from other more successful companies about how to best motivate your employees and get things done.
