    Love working for True Value

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsThe company has a new CEO (1 year in) and is working on creating a new strategic vision, involving the WHOLE company in decisions. The company launched new values about a year ago. People who say they don't have a culture/values haven't taken the time to listen, because they are broadcast everywhere. They value training (internal and external) and people really do care about you. If you work hard, make yourself known (promote YOURSELF people...no one's going to do it for you), and focus on growth and development, you'll go far in this company.

ConsI agree that some managers have a long way to go. I am hoping with the new strategy that a lot of "old thought" is flushed out. I'm also hoping that more people are hired, as we all wear many hats and can be stretched thin.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure you're looking at your Manager/Director level. A lot of them aren't as great as you may think. It's the individual contributors who make this company what it is right now.

Traditional company in mostly good ways.

Assistant Buyer (Former Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsWorking here and supporting individually owned hardware stores gave me better job satisfaction than working in other companies. The company is a long-term stable company for those looking for that sort of environment.

ConsBeing a relatively small company, the opportunities for advancement are minimal as openings occur infrequently. The nature of the business and store owners tend to be more traditional and slower to adapt to retail trends. Store owners can be very set in their ways.

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove training programs to build a stronger 'bench' of potential mid-level employees

Great place to work, especially with the new CEO and direction the company is headed.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsPersonal growth/development, strong focus on values and culture, a lot of managers offer the opportunity to work from home every now and then when needed, everyone really treats you like family

ConsSome managers aren't consistent, but that will hopefully change with the new direction of the company, pay could be more competitive
    (Especially for existing emoyees)

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your teams - there are a lot of great ideas out there, often in the most unexpected places/employees

Going places, but growing pains expected

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsTrue Value has a great mission and vision, to support locally owned businesses across the U.S. and around the world. The culture is warm, and believes in their cause and their core values. They're also preparing and getting aligned for growth.

ConsIt's been a slow-moving, siloed organization for years, and hasn't invested much in infrastructure over the past few decades (which I believe was out of a good intention to be stewards of member/shareholder funds. But you know what they say about "the road to hell"). They're vastly behind technologically, and while they're looking to change this, and change fast, the growing pains are going to be pretty harsh.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the current drive for increased collaboration and focus on the customer chain.

    Eugene Hardware

    Sales (Former Employee) Eugene, OR

ProsGreat place to learn about "stuff." Good Benefits. Some vacation. Nice location. Family run. Eugene Hardware is a fixture in the South Eugene community.

ConsCustomer service responsibilities. The retail business needs certain levels of staffing and that can lead to a certain amount of inflexibility of schedules. However, there is no unreasonable inflexibility in scheduling here.

Advice to Senior ManagementPut more responsibility in the hands of the employees. Department heads should be more involved with ordering and setting displays. Up-to-date sales figures should be made available to employees on a regular to spur innovation and foster a light-hearted competition between departments.

    Great jumping point

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

Pros-The store hasn't been updated since the late 80's, but that adds to the rustic mom-and-pop vibe that the place is known for.
-The learning curve is pretty steep, given that most customers have off the wall questions, but you learn where things are in the store quickly as part of it.
-You also learn how to problem solve and think outside of the box to solve various situations.

Cons-You need to keep track of your own hours as I've had times that the paycheck doesn't match up
-It's essentially a dead end job with minimal room for advancement.

Advice to Senior ManagementAdvertise more! Good show of employee appreciation! Update the POS and computers to at least the early 2000s please.

    A Great Career Move

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsAbility to wear many hats and get exposure to multiple areas of the business as my position is very cross-functional in nature. I would definitely say that one of the big draws that I enjoy is the people that I work with. Warm, friendly and open are some adjectives that I think of to describe True Value Associates.

ConsSome outdated IT systems from a productivity / collaboration standpoint.
