Best to join Turner straight from school if that's where you want to rise.

Project Engineer (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Turner Construction full-time

ProsStrong company and good for your resume with many marquee projects. Has strong procedural focus-good to learn that. Good internal education opportunities. Good benefits.

ConsHard to penetrate the culture or advance when entering from mid-senior level. Turner tends to groom its own for management roles.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake experienced hires part of your organization. Outside influence will make the company stronger. Don't throw the newbies out to the wolves without support-it damages both your staff and your credibility.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Turner is a good place work if you are ok with the big corporate mentality.

Project Engineer (Former Employee)
Somerset, NJ

I worked at Turner Construction full-time for more than 3 years

ProsTurner is progressive and on the cutting edge of the industry. They invested heavily in education and employee development.

ConsTheir risk aversion can be a hinderance to being a team player and often supercedes being a good builder. Paperwork detracts from the project.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest more in relationships with Owners, subcontractors, and vendors.

Challenging yet rewarding at times

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Turner Construction full-time for more than 3 years

ProsYou will learn a lot from many different people, especially when working on a jobsite. There are people who have been with Turner for 10, 15, 20 + years and hearing about their experiences is very useful. Turner is also a very stable company to work for.

ConsWork life balance is very poor and it is difficult to advance unless you know someone at the top. Some people at the top should be replaced because they just follow the same procedures even if they don't work well. It also takes a ton of a paperwork and steps to do perform a simple task at times.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive employees a better work life balance, newletters are dedicated to work life balance, however, no one really has one. Too many hours, not enough recognition. Good place to learn.

Ever evolving

Assistant Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at Turner Construction full-time for more than a year

ProsGood exposure to complex projects

ConsYou will never work on a "Typical" Turner Job

Advice to Senior ManagementFollow through. Turner lacks follow through to self directed initiatives, which in turn leads to skeptisim and unrest. Connectivity, I'm not sure senior management even understands the word. Start with names and one simple fact about an employee. It's not hard to do, people love to talk about themselves.

Remember Turner was built on TIC, but without commitment employees will just tic time away while looking for new ventures.

Listen, too many times something hasn't been in the wheelhouse, but innovation is not a wheelhouse but the progression of teamwork.

ProsMost of the employees are great people and opportunities for growth.

ConsConstantly trying to reinvent the wheel while actually just preaching the latestest and greatest
buzz words.

Good company, good opportunity

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Turner Construction full-time for more than 8 years

ProsSome of the best talent around. The best benefits around, interesting projects. Can be a great opportunity for a young person just getting out of college, be prepared to be thrown to the wolves

ConsLike any big company, you can get lost in the shuffle. Keep your head on straight and go to work everyday. You will get burnt out, there is no work - family balance at crunch time. For a young person to move ahead you (TURNER EMPLOYEES) need to help them understand the various trades, their jobs and sequence of schedule. You have to groom them, not keep secrets from them. They are trying but they could do better.

Advice to Senior ManagementPractice what you preach Teamwork, Integrity, & Commitment. Ensure that middle management knows how to manage others. If projects are failing it's because people running the show are doing things wrong. Remember the big rule I learned in the Navy there are 3 sides to every story; your side, their side, and the truth get all 3 sides before you form your opinion.
