I have been working at U-Haul part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I enjoy working on my specific team. My Team manager is amazing. She goes ABOVE & BEYOND to help our team succeed. We have her personal cell to contact her anytime. I like how every so many months I can change my schedule. The summer hours are plentiful. Great job if you only need part-time. Every person I have had to speak with in the 2 plus years I have been with them all have been VERY helpful.

    Cons

In the summer months from May to mid Sept good luck with having days approved off. Calls are ALWAYS ALWAYS back to back. System issues EVERY SINGLE DAY. Other dept managers can be rude. It is hard to reserve a rental truck knowing that the customer (in the summer) will NOT get the rental. But policy we must still make the reservation and let another dept and store deal with angry customer, but technically they ultimately call in and we the customer contact person has to get yelled at.

    Advice to Management

Your downline people are more than just that smid number. We are people who are handling angry customers because of how you run the company. Implement better ways to help a customer rather than OVER booking a rental truck. Stop making you agents take a reservation when there is no or will not be a rental available. Make it mandatory for ALL stores to reply back to an IM when sent. or have a consequence.

    I have been working at U-Haul part-time

    Pros

great for students and retired people or people who just can't work full time

    Cons

your pay does not match the amount of physical work you do, they do not like to give raises and want to keep you at 20 hours per week. They have a horrible training system. They do not care about turn-over. there is no loyalty to part-time employees who want to stay with the company or advance.

    Advice to Management

revise your training. be loyal to the employees who stay, even the part time ones

I worked at U-Haul (More than a year)

    Pros

You get to work from home. You get paid for every reservation you make and you get bonuses for being compliant with their script.

    Cons

Customers can be very abusive depending on the situation and what you are able to help them with. You have to follow a script to the tee.

    Advice to Management

If an employee gets the reservation or is able to help a customer without using the precise script that should be allowed. The script doesn't always work for everyone.

  5. Easy job, too much micromanagement.

    Pros

I worked with center sales as a work at home employee. For anyone with great communication skills and the ability for sales, its a great position considering that you're highly compensated if you average well. I didn't work peak times but still averaged close 20$/hour. When I had the chance for peak hours, I would average well above that.

    Cons

The managers and supervisors micromanaged everything. It's not their fault since its another team that determines whats "necessary" to verbally say during phone calls. One little mistake (forgetting to ask for an email) and they will pull you to the side and tell you that its an absolute must and waste your time when you could be making another sale.

    Advice to Management

Every call is different, regardless of the required prompt. Do not punish your employees, especially those that average well above the team for something so insignificant. Mangers should be trained to stress the importance of reading prompts that protect legalities for the company, otherwise let your salespersons do their job instead of sounding like a robot.

I worked at U-Haul (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible hours, simple work when doing things with the proper technique as far as hooking up trailers and pumping propane.

    Cons

Hard work if manager schedules workers for wrong work hours and coworkers are really lazy.

    Advice to Management

Support in store manager more by allowing them more flexibility to hire more employees to prevent current employees from being overworked especially over the summer.

    I worked at U-Haul full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

U-Haul as a whole isn't a bad place to work. There is a lot of downtime, but at the same time extremely busy at peak times. The U-Haul culture is very close knit, so first thing's first, become buddy buddy with anyone you meet, or talk to. They all know how it is. The job turns into a very personal engagement, as you become the guy to talk to when things go wrong (reservations being shifted, or when another customer doesn't bring the equipment back on time). Senior management again is very close. If you aren't liked, you're going to have an extremely tough time even keeping a job.

    Cons

Schedule is hectic, no work/home life separation. Pay is a joke, all up the chain. They try to skimp out on pay. GM make no more than 3k a month, and they expect a full time employee to stay no more than 10/hour. Scheduling restrictions make you work alone half the time, which is unacceptable when you're try to run rentals, storage, U-Boxes, and hitch installations all at the same time.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees better. I was given trouble if I tried to start anyone at 9/hr

    Pros

Perfect summer job for students, you can work from home

    Cons

During the summer all part-time customer service employees are scheduled full time hours as needed.

    Advice to Management

Never make your employees feel your bothering them, even at your busiest point provide your support in any minimal way.

  10. Transfer Driver

    I have been working at U-Haul part-time

    Pros

Chauffeur License and good driving record only needed. Only mornings and early afternoon work, Monday to Friday. No weekends. On the clock, so no need to drive quickly, just safely. This job is ideal for a retiree who is interested in some extra money. Management is willing to work with you if you have a second job.

    Cons

Hours vary daily. Don't know when you get off work. Only 20 to 30 hours work only per week usually. Starting pay is not great but it is more than federal minimum wage. About $10/hr.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to communicate to a new hire when to expect a pay raise or if you need to request a pay raise. An employee handbook would help greatly.
