Was great at first, then everything changed.

I worked at U.S. Cellular full-time for more than a year

ProsIf you were in a secluded area that your ASM doesn't get to often, the culture is great. You can have great managers who shield you from what's really going on. The pay is excellent and the benefits are great. They really reward high performers. They have a dynamic organizational model and used to actually believe in it.

ConsThey don't listen to employees when they scream for help. If you're in a hostile environment, HR will tell you that you're making up stories in your head. If you are working too much and getting burnt out, they don't care. Also, they fire people for no reason. I was not fired, but I saw many people go for things that were completely unexplained. "Your work is no longer needed here" is wrongful termination. From everyone you've fired in the Des Moines area, I can't believe you don't have a law suit on your hands. You can't just fire people because they make more than what you could pay some shmuck. They bring in management from T-Mobile that believes in winning and winning alone, even if it requires you to be unethical. USC used to care about it's customers, now they only care about money. Terrible hostility from management and too much pressure to do more than humanly possible.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your employees. Everyone deserves to have a voice, and you can't write of harassment and hostile work environment as fictional. DO NOT LET MANAGERS BE BEST BUDS WITH HR. That is a disaster! You need to get back to the DD and truly believe in it. You are letting your best people walk away from you after you give them all the tools and apply themselves at a company that cares about them. You have so much potential that you are wasting away for cheap labor.

A good Company to work for

ProsGreat people to work with, enjoyed all my co-workers and their dedication to doing the right thing for the customers and the business.

ConsSenior Management has no clue how to lead through the conversion to their new billing system. I do not think US Cellular will be around much longer. They are constantly reacting without taking the necessary time to put in a pro-active response and plan together to address the current issues.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay more attention to results than processes and put in an actual plan of what it will take to bring the billing system in house.

Good Culture...but a company on the decline

ProsGreat overall culture
Promotions occur from within
Immediate management is very supportive and gets creative to make things happen.
Device/Accessory portfolio is growing to help support the sales staff by offering more to sell to customers

ConsUpper management does not have a grasp on where the company needs to be. They try to compete head on with Verizon Wireless which has a customer base over 25 times the size.
The billing issues and system issues have been going on for close to a year at this point and while they have improved they are nowhere near where they should have been when the system was launched (Let alone where it should be at this point in time)

Advice to Senior ManagementReconsider this new billing system and the impact it has had on your business.
Stop trying to be another company and focus on the values and culture that made the company what it is.
Less focus on parity, more focus on differentiators

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Used to be an awesome place

ProsGreat benefits. Many weeks of training before placed on phones. Good pay.

ConsChanging the metric all the time on how your calls are evaluated, makes it hard to stay above and get counseling all the time. To get into a better role off the phones, it's by who you know, not your qualifications. Morale is very low due to can't keep the systems running properly and makes customers mad and they take out on the reps.

Advice to Senior ManagementFix the computer issues and quit putting people that have never been to college or any training in the IT field.

Not the place to be

ProsGreat benefits, the training for the actual position was ok (mostly self trained), great compensation if you perform well/put in your dues and depending on your manager - you might get to work from home. It also depends on your own manager if there is any sort of understanding for a work/life balance.

ConsDifficult to advance or be promoted. Management says they want employees to be open and honest but really only if that is thinking the same as the manager. If you have your own opinion, which is not the way the group thinks, this is not the place for you. Also, some upper level managers have favorite employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet back to the basics and hold everyone accountable for their actions. Managers especially should have a team mentality vs. a "me" mentality.

ProsYou will get good experiece to work in Pressure env. and good exposure to multiple technologies. Flexible to work from home ,they understand the importance of the family life .

ConsCompany is undergoing some major changes bussiness and it lost few employees recently and Fired few on cost cutting bases

Advice to Senior ManagementWould be great if compensation is revised and increase the work force.

Not a bad place to work as far as call centers go but don't drink the kool-aid

ProsThis was a phenomenal place to work....in the beginning. Benefits were definitely top tier with quarterly bonuses when the center met goals. "Skip Levels" forced some semblance of accountability allowing employees to communicate "opportunities for improvement" to their boss' boss.

ConsThe "Dynamic Organization" as envisioned and established by former CEO Jack Rooney kept a small mom and pop personal feel within the organization for the first couple of years I was there. Accountability eventually faded and the "D.O." as it was called went from something you lived, to something you used to get ahead. Management was blinded and unable to discern actual work ethic with lip service. Eventually those that mastered the vernacular, moved into those ranks and outnumbered the good people and thus began the demise of USCC in the Chicagoland area. Falling more in line with the more typical corporate landscape, US Cellular had so much potential but left it on the roadside.

Advice to Senior ManagementIts difficult to show much confidence in a company that hires a McDonalds marketing VP as CEO. That coupled with being too far behind the curve in their handset offerings, unfortunately put the proverbial nail in the coffin. Giving up your largest urban market to keep the focus on rural America just shows that this is a company that is content with being a C student.

Work life balance????

ProsThe entire organization is always focused on the customer. All levels of management will make time to have discussions for professional development and provide their opinions on the direction of projects.

Cons1) Upper levels of management (Area Sales Managers, Senior Managers, and above) lack accountability. They enjoy delegation but will not take responsibility for their actions nor do make timely decisions.

2) Take "diversity" actions too far. Promotions are based on race/gender/etc more than qualifications.
