    Pros

Great work/life balance can be achieved.

    Cons

Cost cutting on a massive rise. Without significant new opportunities, career advancement typically doesn't happen from within.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are still plenty of talented people in the bank...don't overlook them.

I have been working at UBS full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Work life balance can be good. Accommodating management.

    Cons

Performance reviews are a farce - objectives are set and can be met while performance reviews are relative to your peers. This leads to subjective reviews where management favorites are rewarded. Culture is poor as employees who are part of a cost center are viewed as a liability as opposed to value add to the organization.

I worked at UBS full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    -Financial Advisor centric organization
    -Conveniently located to midtown Manhattan
-Beautiful campus on the Hudson, good cafeteria and food court
-A group of extremely talented, dedicated and hard working individuals in home office (IT and marketing organization in particular)

    Cons

-Extreme cutbacks have made it impossible to stay current on IT, infrastructure and marketing
-Senior management priorities change more frequently than I have ever experienced in my 20 year FS career. The outcome of this, has unfortunately had a severe impact on employee moral and unnecessary loss of project dollars and potential revenue

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Hold senior management responsible for failed or cancelled projects, identify what went wrong to prevent it from occurring again and again
-Tap into current employee network to identify areas for improvement

    Cons

Management is clueless when it comes to running brokerage business. They lag in business mix and keeping internal processes up to date.

I have been working at UBS

    Pros

The culture is very laid back. It is not an entirely unpleasant place to work. It is not a high pressure environment, work is usually assigned with ample time to complete it.

    Cons

You work and never really see the results, things are very bureaucratic and political. The environment makes delivering a good product very hard. It is very rigid in some senses and not structured at all in other ways which are actually more relevant to what is produced software wise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management I think largely sees what needs to be done it is how they think they can achieve this that is misguided. Too much focus on trying to measure the unmeasurable and track the untraceable that the essence of what needs to be done is lost. The structure of software development at UBS is built on micromanagement rather than individuals with some level of autonomy.
