Meets standards but does not astonish you.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Davis, CA

ProsOpportunities are general, not much restrictions.

ConsToo many unnecessary procedures and too much ridiculous competitions (B.A majors compete lab opportunities with B.S. majors) and you'll never have the resources you need.

Advice to Senior ManagementMany departments have overlapped functions. Moreover, these overlapped functions are not professional and compulsory. Should simplify the administration to enhance efficiency.

Co-workers are some of the best people to work with, but the work itself is mindless, busy-work

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Davis, CA

ProsEasy work and opportunities to talk and engage with guests and co-workers. Management of the MRAs are done by student employees as well, and they are very personable as well.

ConsBusy work and lots of downtime walking around the ARC pretending to be busy.

    Working at UC Davis

Postdoctoral Researcher (Current Employee) Davis, CA

ProsI am working as a post-doctoral researcher. So, my experience should be considered only for my department as there is not much interaction with rest of the University and students. I had a good time working in the lab.

ConsThere is no interaction of the post-doctoral researchers with the students or rest of the department. This makes them detached from the University in general. This is more so for foreigners who were not connected to UCD for their previous education.

    Sometimes supportive, sometimes not

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Sacramento, CA

ProsGood opportunities, great reputation especially for research.

ConsA lot of cronyism, have to fight to be recognized unless friends with the bosses.

Decent university with some poor upper management in a annoying town.

Graduate Student Researcher (Former Employee) Davis, CA

ProsAs a graduate researcher it is almost completely dependent on which professor your working for. The small bit that is not professor dependent had its positives: the other graduate students a great and make a substantial community that can be very fun to participate in.

ConsAs a graduate researcher it is almost completely dependent on which professor your working for. The small bit that is not professor dependent had its negatives: the administration level employees do not seem to have a good grasp on what is they are being asked to do.

    HR Assistant

Human Resources Assistant (Current Employee) Davis, CA

ProsGreat benefits. Good retirement plan. Career advancement classes.

ConsLow range salary scale. Parking, union dues. Far from Sac area, commute.... is horrible.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart employee's off in the mid range salary scale instead of the bottom.

    Great people, poor compensation

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsVery diverse and knowledgeable staff and faculty with many areas well managed and run. The facilities are very nice and coming into work never feels depressing.

ConsPoor Compensation was a major issue. I think it all comes back to what the budget allows for since there were many works with less experience but higher pay in similar jobs around the school.

    UC Davis Medical Center

Clinical Nurse II (Current Employee) Sacramento, CA

ProsIt's a Level I Trauma Center. Great experience. Lots to learn. Able to self schedule in the ED. Almost always get what I request as my work schedule. Very busy ER. Shift goes by fast.

ConsSupposed to be "zero tolerance of violence" at this hospital. But they are quite the opposite. Patients coming to ED are very abusive and the hospital does not stand by it's nurses. This hospital is afraid to "ban" patients from coming back.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop letting repeat "offenders" come back to this hospital. Patients who are abusive every time they come back to be seen for the same complaint should not be allowed back. I know patients who have been banned from other Sacramento area hospitals d/t their violent and abusive behavior. Why do "we" not have the guts to tell them they are not welcome back??

Great for technology and innovation, could do better with managing people.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Davis, CA

ProsExcellent environment for working with technology and innovating new lighting solutions. Lots of great projects with practical focus on delivering useful work. Great work/life balance.

ConsScientists and engineers do not always make the best managers. Soft skills in management could have be improved. University R&D job so pay was well below market value. Political skills required to advance.

Advice to Senior ManagementRespect your employees as people, notice when the perform as agreed to, and provide constructive criticism (tell them what you need that you are not getting) when they don't perform instead of just saying demeaning or judgmental things.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
