Great training and experience if you work in the right lab, no room to grow

I worked at UC Davis full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The labs are really laid back and people are always willing to share their talents and help you troubleshoot. It is a great environment where like-minded thinkers can get together to share ideas and a place to make friends that are around the same age group. If the PI of the lab is passionate about the lab, you will receive great training and will be given good opportunities. Those variety of work experiences can be carried on into the next job. It is great to have a variety of techniques under your belt, whereas other jobs will just train you to do ONE thing, and one thing only. PTO is 3 weeks for someone who is just starting at a junior position, and the medical benefits are great--I have not paid out of pocket for general medical needs.

    Cons

There is no growth, if you don't have a PhD, you won't be able to go anywhere with your career at a university. The only research you can do is be a technician, always doing the repetitive jobs that the PI or graduate students don't have time for. For how many hats a technician wears-- lab management, hiring lab assistants, doing their own projects, picking up on other people's projects, etc., the compensation is very low. Even if the technician holds a master's degree, they get paid the same amount as someone who just received their Bachelor's two months ago.
Safety is a big issue and the university labs seems to be very relaxed about it.
Even though Environmental Health & Safety implements rules and checks the labs yearly, but it is not enough. People eat and drink in the lab, wear opened toe-ed shoes, etc. Safety precautions in some labs often do not exist when handling dangerous or volatile chemicals, and careful chemical disposal measures do not exist. The use of large and expensive equipment have lack of training and they expect you to know how to use it off the bat (ie. large autoclaves, centrifuges, biological safety cabinets).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please give more extensive training regarding safety precautions. PTO is given so people can take vacations, so please allow them to take it instead of just selling their PTO when they resign.

    Pros

Great student environment, basic cashier or inventory tasks and shelving books.

    Cons

Upper Management can be sporadic and disorganized, focusing on different projects and having lackluster results in said projects

I have been working at UC Davis part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

It was pretty mundane and general lab work. I dont think it would be anything different than any other big university. I liked the amount of knowledge obtained from the research however.

    Cons

Very underpayed. For students working part time it doesent feel like 8.95 an hour is sufficient to make a dent in expenses.

I worked at UC Davis part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The campus culture is fresh, fun and inspiring.

    Cons

The upper-level management and administrators do not care about the state of the campus or the needs of the students. Diversity is prioritized over talent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get a new chancellor.

I worked at UC Davis part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Nice neighborhood, great school. Great professors as well. Office culture very relaxed and professors all help you when you need help.

    Cons

There is no room for personal growth, since there is no pay at all.

    I worked at UC Davis

    Pros

Opportunities are general, not much restrictions.

    Cons

Too many unnecessary procedures and too much ridiculous competitions (B.A majors compete lab opportunities with B.S. majors) and you'll never have the resources you need.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Many departments have overlapped functions. Moreover, these overlapped functions are not professional and compulsory. Should simplify the administration to enhance efficiency.

I worked at UC Davis part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Easy work and opportunities to talk and engage with guests and co-workers. Management of the MRAs are done by student employees as well, and they are very personable as well.

    Cons

Busy work and lots of downtime walking around the ARC pretending to be busy.

I have been working at UC Davis full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I am working as a post-doctoral researcher. So, my experience should be considered only for my department as there is not much interaction with rest of the University and students. I had a good time working in the lab.

    Cons

There is no interaction of the post-doctoral researchers with the students or rest of the department. This makes them detached from the University in general. This is more so for foreigners who were not connected to UCD for their previous education.
