I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

UCSF has consistently top-rated graduate and professional programs, gets a lot of NIH funding, and grad program admins/program coordinators try to help students with the difficulties of grad school and living in expensive SF. Student health is excellent, accessible and efficient.

    Cons

The bureaucracy is huge and sometimes impenetrable. No undergrad students means very little student programming, UCSF housing is at market rate, and there's not a huge sense of community, especially at the Mission Bay campus.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage more community outside of individual lab groups or building floors. Better community spaces and seating would go a long way.

I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Name recognition and high quality of the patient care and research and evaluation work.
Great benefits for employees and their families.

    Cons

    Bureaucracy
Lower pay compared to some private companies, but benefits balance that out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The restructuring of the HR department has not been smooth, and I would say it's still difficult for hiring managers to navigate as well as for employees. Hiring, lay offs, any HR paperwork is more time consuming to complete now.

Additionally, many employees wished there was transportation from BART to the campuses. There are campus shuttles, but getting from BART to a campus can be very time consuming.

    Pros

The leadership was empathetic and inspiring, I worked with amazing peers whose reviews and examples motivated me. What I learned on the job was also applicable outside the work environment and helped me grow tremendously.

Due to the different school that operated independently, sometimes information gets lost in the system which could affect some timelines.
