I worked at UCLA Health part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good group of people. HR works with you a lot quicker than other places. A lot of smart people here makes it fun and challenging. The area is nice and there can be a lot of room for your own academic/personal growth.

    Cons

My laboratory was pretty passive in getting their messages across from time to time. If I was doing anything they didn't like, I would hear it much later, indirectly. Parking is always a problem/hassle, or expensive.

I have been working at UCLA Health full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I enjoyed working for UCLA - main campus and affiliated Santa Monica office. The work hours were appropriate, we received all of the state mandated holidays, very friendly atmosphere, really good benefits.

    Cons

I enjoyed the Westwood campus more due to the range and type of professionals, unlike the Santa Monica campus which is a smaller campus and smaller minds. Parking is a hassle and commuting to the campus was difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Raises are hard to come by due to the step system in the research arena. One has to really fight for a raise which I didn't like. Bonuses are virtually non-existent, so you basically are at the same level for a while.

I have been working at UCLA Health full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I really enjoyed working at UCLA because of it's professional environment, and great benefits! They also promote personal professional growth and offer a great array of classes for staff to take advantage of.

    Cons

Getting to work on time was always a challenge, due to the commuting and the horrendous traffic on the 405 freeway. Hated spending almost four additional hours on the road each day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should explore having staff flexible schedules, maybe longer hours and less days -- that would greatly benefit those who have a long commute.

    Cons

A long commute. Can be a bit overwhelming to be expected to help multiple researchers and their distinct projects on the same day.

I have been working at UCLA Health

    Pros

Brightest and most innovative minds to learn from. Westwood is a great area.

    Cons

Comparative to other schools for residency programs, UCLA doesn't pay close to what other residency programs do. For the most part, the school is 50 years old without an update. It is basically is a dump.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a dean that is more interested in the education students and the treatment of patients, than squeezing every penny out of the patients, staff, students and residents.
