I have been working at UMBC full-time

    Pros

After being here for some time, you can earn up to 22 vacation days plus holidays and sick time. Good place for someone who doesn't want a stressful job. They do offer 1 day of telecommuting but it is totally up to your supervisor whether you are given this option. If you are looking to get a degree, they do offer tuition remission; spouses included after a 2 year employment.

    Cons

As far as staff are concerned, there is no opportunity for promotion. They like to hire from outside rather than provide training so you can gain new skills to advance your career in steps. Salaries have been stagnant for about 5 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management does not communicate to support staff. Needs to recognize subordinates as part of the team. Also, needs to work on creating different levels of job category so staff can feel like they are able to grow and don't have to leave to get a promotion.

I have been working at UMBC full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Friendly quiet environment
    One can follow his/her dreams
    Has a very good President
An active dynamic with a bright future school

    Cons

Does not have a good student support
Does not have enough strong networking
The training is OK but does not have enough facilities

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management team should be more in touch with students to have a better understanding on what happens at each department.

I have been working at UMBC part-time for less than a year

    Pros

The hours at the Design and Print shop are very flexible. Also, the designers and animators work together in one room, so it's rather collaborative. Although the students are working at minimum wage, it's an excellent application of what they are taught in classes.

    Cons

The personnel is frequently changing, resulting in some confusion for newcomers and clients during transitions. However, it is something that cannot be helped.

I have been working at UMBC full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Excellent education reputation and well deserved. Happy students, well run school. President Hrabowski is smart and committed to the school.

    Cons

Parking is always a problem for both staff and students. Lay offs and unpaid furlough days always hanging in the air as possibilities at the will of the state budget.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop promoting people for the big jobs just because they have worked for the school forever. Doesn't mean they know what to do or how to run a division.

I have been working at UMBC full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good University in the Maryland System. Everything is standard for the State of Maryland, so not much to say here.

    Cons

The work day-to-day life really depends on the supervisor. I was not very lucky with that and had some issues with the immediate boss. Everything worked out in the end but the contract was short.

I have been working at UMBC part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Caring staff and faculty who really value the opinions of others. They are most often very flexible when it comes to scheduling, and go out of their way to accommodate you.

    Cons

I had such a great experience there as a student and as a teaching assistant that it is hard to think of any!
