I have been working at UMBC

    Pros

State Employee = great vacation accrual and benefits.
University = lots of holiday time off around Christmas.
Research setting = learning many useful skills and building a strong resume.
I was in a small office so things were personal and flexible and supportive

    Cons

Difficult to get merit based pay increases within State system. Small office can also lead to the occasional petty conflict but it was still a friendly work environment.

I have been working at UMBC part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Very friendly, great place to learn office culture, ethics and a right place to learn all the required office assistant skills, and flexible.

    Cons

Can get boring, but with the right people around you'll see yourself doing really well.

I worked at UMBC full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people I worked directly with, The amount of holiday and other time off pay.

    Cons

Difficult to make changes as a lot of professors are very set in their ways.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire people based on work experience and not just the fact they have a degree. This is true for many positions. Interesting thing is that the other divisions (i.e.-UMB) do hire those who have experience and may not have a degree.

I have been working at UMBC full-time

    Pros

After being here for some time, you can earn up to 22 vacation days plus holidays and sick time. Good place for someone who doesn't want a stressful job. They do offer 1 day of telecommuting but it is totally up to your supervisor whether you are given this option. If you are looking to get a degree, they do offer tuition remission; spouses included after a 2 year employment.

    Cons

As far as staff are concerned, there is no opportunity for promotion. They like to hire from outside rather than provide training so you can gain new skills to advance your career in steps. Salaries have been stagnant for about 5 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management does not communicate to support staff. Needs to recognize subordinates as part of the team. Also, needs to work on creating different levels of job category so staff can feel like they are able to grow and don't have to leave to get a promotion.

I have been working at UMBC full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Friendly quiet environment
    One can follow his/her dreams
    Has a very good President
An active dynamic with a bright future school

    Cons

Does not have a good student support
Does not have enough strong networking
The training is OK but does not have enough facilities

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management team should be more in touch with students to have a better understanding on what happens at each department.
