I have been working at UMass Medical School

    Pros

Good place for post-doctoral training . Very strong infrastructure and plenty of resources to pursue research. This place pay lot of emphasis on bridging bench to clinic. Nice collection of scientists and clinicians.

    Cons

Does not follow NIH guidelines to pay post-doctoral fellow. No uniformity in salary. Even within same department for same position there is disparity in salary especially for foreigner fellows. HR always attempts to offer you lower end of salary.

Many investigators are self centered. Few investigators take a decade to give degree to graduate student.

Very good place for research associate and lab manager as after few years of work they are paid far better then post-doctoral fellow and have to undertake minimal stress.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have uniformity in salary of post-doctoral fellow, Research Scientist and Instructor and appreciate there hard work by providing better compensation.

I have been working at UMass Medical School full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

This is a great place to work for graduate or postdoctoral training. There are many wonderful scientists here and the scientific community as a whole is very collaborative and supportive. I think the graduate student and post-doc salaries are competitive and the health benefits are great.

    Cons

As in any research environment there is a lot of pressure to progress so sometimes it can be challenging to find a work life balance, but not impossible. I also feel that there is little room to advance for non-tenure track scientists.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For students and post docs there needs to be better support and career development.

    Pros

403B, health care insurance, paid time off, some flexibility in work schedule, purposeful work. My manager gave me a lot of responsibility and time for special projects that helped me further develop my skills.

    Cons

During my time at UMass I noticed some upper management drama with in the department and also a noticeable occurrence of lay offs, seemed to be waves of lay offs across all of UMass for a while.

I have been working at UMass Medical School full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The scientific community at UMass is one of the best, the people here are supportive, knowledgeable and very willing to collaborate. The research here is innovating and exciting, and you could not ask for a better environment to train as a scientist.

    Cons

Like most universities, postdoctoral fellowships come with a small salary and at UMass often fall below the NIH salary cap. While there is great scientific mentoring, there is little room to grow and advance beyond the level of postdoc, and the career mentoring needs a boost. Also, the Chancellor could put more energy in promoting the research here instead of only focusing on the Med School and translational science.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be great for UMass to help with career development and advancement for postdocs, specifically helping to engage in opportunities outside of the PI pipeline.
