    Pros

UMASS offers a competitive pay scale, and excellent benefits. Working in a non-clinical department, you may still qualify for one of the unions present.

    Cons

Staff is under appreciated. The financial strains that management feels trickle down to their staff and effects their attitude. Management likes to pin coworkers against each other. Management talks down to their employees.

    Advice to Management

Encourage team work within the department. Show staff appreciation.

    Pros

Big place, great patients, lots of opportunity to advance

    Cons

Lots of conflict on units and among staff; vision isn't clear to front line

    Advice to Management

Listen to the people on the front line. They know what to do to fix the place

    Pros

Some of the physicians are excellent, as are some of the nurses and CNA's. Many insurances accepted.

    Cons

Horrible electronic medical record system, not supportive of new nurses, people that repeatedly don't do their jobs retain their jobs making it difficult for those who work with them.

    Advice to Management

Be more selective. Just because a nurse is a warm body to fill a position and take a patient load, doesn't mean he/she is competent. You need to do a better job supporting new nurses and you need to intervene when there are issues of disrespect, incivility, and bullying.

    Pros

Amazing highly intelligent medical personnel giving great care under less than optimal circumstances

    Cons

After working at UMass Memorial for many, many years I can honestly say that management has brought this institution to its knees. The installation of several computer systems that were suppose to improve patient care have caused financial chaos, and have not improved patient care. Several different computer programs are required and none of them talk to each other. For example, one system for inpatients, one system for outpatients, one system for the ER.... and the list goes on and on. Nurses are now married to their COWS (computers on wheels) instead of providing patient care and time is taken up documenting and scanning bar codes. Computers were suppose to make life easier but UMASS MEMORIAL purchased the worst systems possible. Shame on them! There is very little recognition for doing a great job! Lots of extra and overtime because of poor staffing.

    Advice to Management

Take a look at various business models who have happy employees and you may want to institute some of their ideas. A happy employee is a productive employee. Perhaps the wrong computer system was instituted and does not work successfully for such a large trauma center and should be rethought. Also, you should listen to the people who provide the care at the bedside because they are the real deal and not someone from upper level management or some consulting firm. Your decision to take away the IV Therapy team and phlebotomists will only decrease patient satisfaction and increase infections. This will not help the UMass Memorials image with the general public. Just food for thought.

    Pros

Co-workers, access to current medical information and protocols, salary for union workers.

    Cons

Turnover of leadership, top heavy with VP's all making too much money and getting bonuses off the work of their employees, no incentive to learn, salary for non-union employees. The union nurses get raises guaranteed raises and too many nurses take advantage of that. Union is very strong and therefore nurses get away with way too much with no consequences for their actions. Lack of respect and professionalism throughout the company. Too much favoritism, treatment among employees with the same jobs is not equal, some people required to work weekends and holidays and other are not.

    Advice to Management

Listen to ideas from employees, learn the jobs of those working for you, offer more learning opportunities to those that want to learn, treat all employees equally, create job descriptions that honestly describe the position, rather than adding responsibilities (under the disguise that "things have change") after the position has been accepted.

    Pros

Competitive pay, great benefits, wonderful colleagues who work hard and are very supportive; people who really care about their job.

    Cons

Managers who give preferential treatment to favorites, including letting their favorites get away with pretty much anything, hiring them as managers, etc.

    Pros

The organization is filled with committed and dedicated professionals who work tirelessly. The talent is amazing. The organizational potential untapped.

    Cons

Unprofessional behaviors and poor performance are routinely tolerated. There is considerable infighting. There are also many silos. Both of these prevents balanced decision making.

    Advice to Management

Recognize performance, hard work and outcomes

    Pros

The great pay! Good benefits. Lots of patients to care for.

    Cons

Human Resources and Management does not support the employees as advertised on their website. They will lie and make up stories to get their point across. They have the attitude of shoot through the door first and then open it to see what is on the other side, with no care or concern whose career they kill!

    Advice to Management

Revamp the Human Resourses Department, from the Top down! The culture there is not one of respect for the fellow employees.

    Pros

They offer great benefits although paid time off is earned rather than a set amount each year. The coworkers are great and make you feel like a part of the team.

    Cons

They leave positions unfilled for way to long even if it has been posted while expected people outside of the position to pick up the slack. They allow for nepotism making it really hard to effectively work and feel like you are not being held back when supervisors are allowed to promote their significant others.

    Advice to Management

Reward the people who are working hard for you day in and day out. If someone takes on all of the responsibilites of a role and does it with a smile and comes in trying to make things better for their team and management, reward that. If you say that you promote from with in, do that. If you promise a position to someone, keep them in the loop on the status of process and be honest. Stop hiring your friends and start taking care of the people who are taking care of you.
