Not the worst company to work for, but not the best.

I have been working at UMass Memorial Medical Center full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Fabulous benefits. The starting pay was $20+ per hour for senior clerical workers. Furthering your education is encouraged. Should you be interested in another position within the company, you get special consideration. First two years with this company are the best.

    Cons

After two years conditions go downhill. Criticism is offered but praise is rare. Overtime is frowned upon. You cannot work longer than your allotted hours per week. No matter how much work you have to do, you must get it done within your weekly hours. Computer problems are always something that has to be dealt with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would greatly help if you looked for ways to boost morale. Spend some time in the trenches with the employees and get a taste of what we go through day in and day out. Revamp your IS system. Many of us are having problems several times a week. Get to know your employees better.

    Pros

Half price on food, free coffe and fountain drinks. You get to interact with a lot of people that could help you later on in life.

    Cons

Can get very busy. Poor management, and communications. Needs a better training program

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Communicate more often to employees.

I have been working at UMass Memorial Medical Center for more than 8 years

    Pros

You meet really great people. It is a decent atmosphere, but more can be done to better the facility.

    Cons

The medical center is a work in progress. A lot needs to be done to make it an upper echelon facility. Management needs to be proactive instead of reactive. They also don't want to spend any money to make things better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the employees and get their feedback before making decisions that you won't know the repercussions of when changes are made or going to be made.

    Pros

Even though they are shrinking, there are still great and competitive benefits

    Cons

Salary, and the current directors of pharmacy are not to be trusted. They are expected to retire within the next five years, which may drastically improve the

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Replace the current directors of pharmacy at the University and Memorial campuses. They are ineffective managers of people, uninspiring, and, in the case of the Memorial director, create an air of mistrust by pitting current employers against one another and lies when it suits him in an effort to preserve his own job security.

    Pros

Ability to move to different applications, lots of work, work/life balance, people that you support are great, physicians, RN's are all willing to learn technology.

    Cons

Unable to move ahead, merit increases are small, management is controlling, mico-management, no ability to think and make decisions based upon situation, Anillary team fell apart and all new hires are on board. New Soarian system has a significant amout of downtime which impacts the ancillary departments. Not sure why they chose to move from Meditech to Soarian when a majority of large orginizations are going to Epic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Believe in the talent that you have and quit outsourcing

    Cons

Despite whatever skills and education you acquire over time, they really want you to stay in the same job forever.

Good place to work - would be great if there were less politics

I worked at UMass Memorial Medical Center

    Pros

The benefits at UMass are really good. Excellent health care, competitive PTO/sick leave, good low-cost day-care. The IT department is kept rather lean in its staffing levels, so there are enough avenues where a person can really take on new responsibility and carve their own path. It feels alot like a start-up company.

    Cons

Politics abound. Not just at the C-level, but permeating through all levels of the organization. Reviews and raises are arbitrary, not based at all on your performance but on the discretion of the manager. People get hired because of who they know, not necessarily because they are qualified. Any form of promotion, raise, advancement, or betterment within the organization can only come after a good deal of politicking and selling oneself. As a result, there is a good deal of personal drama that is exposed throughout the work day, often to an unprofessional extent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Any senior level person who was there when UMass and Memorial merged in 2000 needs to go. Umass would be far better off if its managers were outsiders who were not part of any of the politics of the last 10 years. The place just needs a good house cleaning - the workers that are there are great.

I have been working at UMass Memorial Medical Center

    Pros

The company offers awesome benefits, especially prescription drugs.

    Cons

If you aren't a nurse, you won't get the recognition you deserve. Non-clinical staff are extremely undervalued

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show value to ALL employees, not just the clinical staff.

good place to advance in career.
    transfer is easy

    Cons

too much politics and backstabbing There is favoritism and so much unprofessionalism in there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

management should not go by hearsay and there should be better people appointed as leaders.
There should be training for the lead techs in how to supervise co workers.
