Cafeteria Worker (Current Employee) Worcester, MA

ProsHalf price on food, free coffe and fountain drinks. You get to interact with a lot of people that could help you later on in life.

ConsCan get very busy. Poor management, and communications. Needs a better training program

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunicate more often to employees.

    Opened doors for future opportunities

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsYou meet really great people. It is a decent atmosphere, but more can be done to better the facility.

ConsThe medical center is a work in progress. A lot needs to be done to make it an upper echelon facility. Management needs to be proactive instead of reactive. They also don't want to spend any money to make things better.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the employees and get their feedback before making decisions that you won't know the repercussions of when changes are made or going to be made.

    Meh

    Pharmacist (Former Employee) Worcester, MA

ProsEven though they are shrinking, there are still great and competitive benefits

ConsSalary, and the current directors of pharmacy are not to be trusted. They are expected to retire within the next five years, which may drastically improve the

Advice to Senior ManagementReplace the current directors of pharmacy at the University and Memorial campuses. They are ineffective managers of people, uninspiring, and, in the case of the Memorial director, create an air of mistrust by pitting current employers against one another and lies when it suits him in an effort to preserve his own job security.

    Ancillary Applications

Clinical Applications Analyst (Current Employee) Worcester, MA

ProsAbility to move to different applications, lots of work, work/life balance, people that you support are great, physicians, RN's are all willing to learn technology.

ConsUnable to move ahead, merit increases are small, management is controlling, mico-management, no ability to think and make decisions based upon situation, Anillary team fell apart and all new hires are on board. New Soarian system has a significant amout of downtime which impacts the ancillary departments. Not sure why they chose to move from Meditech to Soarian when a majority of large orginizations are going to Epic.

Advice to Senior ManagementBelieve in the talent that you have and quit outsourcing

    Secretary (Current Employee) Worcester, MA

ProsNice people, great benefits, close to home.

ConsDespite whatever skills and education you acquire over time, they really want you to stay in the same job forever.

Advice to Senior ManagementMentor other institutions (not only hospitals) who are progressing even in this economy.

Good place to work - would be great if there were less politics

Information Systems (Former Employee) Worcester, MA

ProsThe benefits at UMass are really good. Excellent health care, competitive PTO/sick leave, good low-cost day-care. The IT department is kept rather lean in its staffing levels, so there are enough avenues where a person can really take on new responsibility and carve their own path. It feels alot like a start-up company.

ConsPolitics abound. Not just at the C-level, but permeating through all levels of the organization. Reviews and raises are arbitrary, not based at all on your performance but on the discretion of the manager. People get hired because of who they know, not necessarily because they are qualified. Any form of promotion, raise, advancement, or betterment within the organization can only come after a good deal of politicking and selling oneself. As a result, there is a good deal of personal drama that is exposed throughout the work day, often to an unprofessional extent.

Advice to Senior ManagementAny senior level person who was there when UMass and Memorial merged in 2000 needs to go. Umass would be far better off if its managers were outsiders who were not part of any of the politics of the last 10 years. The place just needs a good house cleaning - the workers that are there are great.

    Great benefits

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Worcester, MA

ProsThe company offers awesome benefits, especially prescription drugs.

ConsIf you aren't a nurse, you won't get the recognition you deserve. Non-clinical staff are extremely undervalued

Advice to Senior ManagementShow value to ALL employees, not just the clinical staff.

Prosgood place to advance in career.
    transfer is easy

Constoo much politics and backstabbing There is favoritism and so much unprofessionalism in there.

Advice to Senior Managementmanagement should not go by hearsay and there should be better people appointed as leaders.
There should be training for the lead techs in how to supervise co workers.
