I have been working at UPS part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

My driver is really cool and helpful. They provide a uniform. It is physical work that burns some calories. It's fun to ride around on the truck. Pay is decent for what it is.

    Cons

Wow..where to begin. The training sucks. You are on call with no guaranteed hours. The dispatchers are idiots that are always telling you the wrong length of your shift. Some days you don't aren't even told how long you will be working until the shift is over. I get that they need to ramp up for the holidays, but come on, this is a joke.

    I worked at UPS

    Pros

    benefits are the ONLY pro.

    Cons

too much to list. i was assaulted twice. once by a fellow employee (spit on) and another by a supervisor (who was immediately fired, but only because he did it in from of the area supervisor). they waited the exact length of time which allowed me to sue, then fired me for on a trumped up charge of insubordination. this is after almost 7 yrs with the company. although, truth be told, i was very unhappy working there for at least the last three yrs. i was too young to realize what was happening, but i should have sued them before it came to that. lesson learned. please, do not work for this company. you'll thank me later.

I have been working at UPS part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Got hired 15 an hr for helper was called two Monday's ago asked if I had a uniform she told me they would send me one with my driver. Told me I would get a call everyday through Christmas . I never got a call and my uniform never came and I've seen driver three times since then. I called back and emailed and have not gotten any response. Thanks for making me drive two hours for nothing! Kind of irritated I was on my last dollar and couldn't afford to waste anything! I needed a job not for someone to play games

    Cons

They are just hiring you and never calling so what's the point?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If your not going to utilize the people you hire don't hire them! People have bills! I wouldn't have been out looking for a job if I didn't need it!

I have been working at UPS part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Coworkers are great people; even some of the supervisors. I enjoy that everyone I work with has a very strong work ethic. It's too bad they aren't rewarded enough for it.

    Cons

Management does not employ enough resources nor plan ahead of time for higher volume. Dispatch of drivers has been terrible on multiple occasions due to a drive for more pickup at the drivers' inconvenience (and therefore more profit). This always effects every shift and how efficiently things end up running. Due to a lack of employment and allocation of jobs for each shift, most people (at least in the evening shift) are very overworked, underpaid, treated unfairly, and distressed due to all of the above. Overall terrible working conditions in my opinion.

Side note; most of the time while I've worked there no one has gotten the proper training to assist the learning of their job. Again, poor planning. Somehow without proper training management still assumes each individual should execute their job properly. It seems like the goals and duties of each individual change on a daily basis, making the working environment constantly hectic. Hectic does not equal efficiency.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Plan ahead much more. Don't be too greedy with your hourly workers. Treat them all with more respect (which includes allocating enough individuals to get jobs done efficiently). This will allow more flow of volume which should, in turn, benefit everyone involved. It's not that difficult of a science. 2-3 thousand packages a night is very different than 6-9 thousand. Think more about where many of the problems are recurring, hire more to remedy said problems, and everything will run much more smoothly. And especially plan for proper training much better instead of getting frustrated and mad each day because some individuals do not know their job as well as if they had proper training. Overall, just plan much better. Things will run more smoothly and individuals will feel more respected and, in turn, respect you more.

I worked at UPS full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

great pay, union job for seasonal and part-time means OT after 5 hrs per day. tou can work double shifts but the first and second shift are seperate as far as time goes.hard work. you can go to work at 2;30 am and offload big trucks into little trucks in the main wharhouse for 6 hrs at $11.50/hr x5plus$17.25x1, then get on a truck delivering packages for 8 hrs $8.50x5plus$12,75x3. thats $150/day 14 hrs

    Cons

. with my commute, 30 min each way, and the fact i had to stay with the driver untill we returned to my car, it was more like a 19hr day. if i had lived within bicycling distance of the hub, i would have stayed at it. heavy hard work.

    I worked at UPS

    Pros

    The benefits are really good.

    Cons

The chances for advancement are strictly seniority based. The goal of a Hub or Center worker is ultimately to become driver unfortunately this can take a very long time and the package handlers are part-time employees. One of the most discouraging aspects I encountered is that every 7th package car driver hire is an out of union hire and this creates a lot of animosity with people who have been working in the warehouse for years especially if it is a non union supervisor who are also eligible for the 7th hire. There are many situations were someone will have worked there for a decade and see some kid get hired off the street and get the position you've been trying to get for years. Also because of the union you get stuck working with people who are absolutely worthless but simply can't be fired. I worked with two guys who got in a physical altercation (pushing) at work and both retained their jobs. Another con is the vitriolic relationship between union workers and corporate, and it can get really bad. Now this is purely anecdotal but a lot of old timers talked about how the company used to be amazing and considered one of the best companies to work for before it went public in 1999. Corporate seems absolutely aloof and because of the Union are almost adversarial. I worked at both a large hub and a center, the problems I illustrated were prevalent in both but much more pronounced in the latter. I would not recommend working for UPS if you are looking for a career but if you need to work through school or are in need of a temporary job it's great because of the benefits which you get as a part time employee. If you do want to make a career out of it make sure you find out how many people are ahead of you in seniority and frankly how old the package car drivers look (ie close to retirement) because chances are you will be a part time employee for five years at least. I was finally compelled to switch jobs when corporate started cutting the driving jobs after people retired or quite, so that is also a factor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be less adversarial and I know this out of the average supervisors depth but, they really need to change the advancement system.

    I worked at UPS

    Pros

They have great benefits. If you have intentions on starting at a first level of support and get a lot of lateral "promotions" that cause additional work for no extra pay this is the place for you.

    Cons

Not all but most of the management is corrupted. I have personally been to bars with supervisors and managers as a first level agent. Additionally they where sleeping with there subordinates. I watched the women that would sleep with them get promotions over other people when they did not have the knowledge or deserve it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have two words for the management. CLEAN HOUSE. Some of the supervisors you think are your top performers are sleeping with first level agents that are now coaches... *Cough *Cough Bravo *Cough.
