    Pros

Set pace for hours worked. Worked from home and local area. Diverse population interviewed and interview skills used. Median hourly wage was well over national average. Reimbursed for mileage. Assisting other enumerators in reduction of refusals.

    Cons

Short term position. Supervisors were not always accurate in checking and processing work. Necessary to return to same communities many times. Some times worked alone in the field.

    Advice to Management

Seek out exceptional employees for future work. Many work in the field and know the ins and outs of completing work in an efficient manner on and off field. Encourage field reps to team up to reduce refusals and increase amount of work completed.

    Pros

The facilities are very good, and the people are nice to work with.

    Cons

Contractors are prevented from working remote.

    Advice to Management

Allow contractors to work remote, and it might prevent talent from leaving.

You receive very good benefits, including telework opportunities and a flexible schedule.

    Cons

There is not a lot of opportunities for career growth and management skills are lacking.

    Advice to Management

Many of the managers need solid training in communication and management basics.

    Pros

The job was interesting, because I had the opportunity to meet a lot of people that I never would have in the course of my normal life. Most of the people I engaged with were nice. There was a certain amount of flexibility in the hours. This was a nice little pick-up gig for earning a little on the side.

    Cons

Some of the people I came across were unpleasant, annoyed by the survey, didn't want to talk to me, or downright rude and on one occasion, nasty. A couple of lonely people just wanted to talk and talk and tell you their life story, and it was occasionally hard to dis-engage while being polite. In a rural area, you could spend a lot on gas, getting around to the various people on your list, although they will try to customize your locations.

    Advice to Management

None, the guidance provided was adequate. Oh, rural addresses—these need to be accurate. I found a portion of them, something on the order of 10% impossible to find.

    Pros

Great hours, pay and management. Did mostly human resource functions and learned a lot about HR and payroll.

    Cons

Worked during 2010 census. Temp employment. No benefits.

    Advice to Management

Retain the best workers. Loyalty should also count for something.

    Pros

This is a fast paced federal government Information Technology organization that is on the leading edge of technology deployment and use.

    Cons

There seems to be a never ending list of technologies and services that are undergoing major change simultaneously. The pace is fun but its hard to do everything well.

    Advice to Management

Determine what the true priority for information technology based services are and focus on doing each of them very well rather than attempt to set everything as a top priority.
