    Amazing work environment and colleagues

    Clerk (Former Employee) Washington, DC

ProsThe Coast Guard "does more with less people." It's a small community and everyone works incredibly hard and supports one another. You get tons of experience quickly and have a great network of people around you. People are incredibly motivated and it's just the best work place.

ConsWith the federal government making budget cuts across the board, room for advancement has become more limited in recent years. I think things are starting to improve, but it's always a slow process with the federal government.

    Great Outfit!

Program Manager (Current Employee) Washington, DC

ProsGreat mission and people. USCG invests in proficient/competent workforce. Close, family-like, and Coasties are motivated. Not many whiners in this outfit and very little to whine about.

ConsWork at the HQ in Washington DC is terrific except for three things:
    1. Commute to the HQ is horrible, long, frustrating, unreliable. Worst I've had to endure in 30+ years.
    2. Parking...there is none, so commute even more arduous...carpools, or car to train, train station changes, bus/shuttle, then long walk (no fun in the rain!)...reduces flexibility adds unnecessarily to daily anxiety.
    3. Facility security...ridiculously excessive (and probably outrageously expensive)...frustrates ability to get the job done...partner agencies have learned to avoid USCG HQ like the plague...security "gauntlet" not worth the hassle, delays.

Advice to Senior ManagementFix parking and adopt a more sensible security posture at the facility that won't impact ability to work with partners.

    Mission oriented organization

Chief Financial Officer Directorate (Current Employee) Washington, DC

ProsThe vast majority of people who work for the Coast Guard are there because they believe in the missions of the organization. They are motivated, smart and dedicated to their profession.

ConsRecent federal budget cuts have made performing the missions of the CG more difficult. Another result of the budget cuts are smaller class sizes, and long wait-lists to join the CG.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider eliminating one or two of the lower priority missions from the CG's 11 statutory missions, rather than applying cuts to the entire organization. Better to do nine missions well than 11 missions poorly.

It's been a life changing career.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGreat opportunity for advancement and geographic selection. Exposure to a wide array of professions and personalities. You learn what it means to be part of a team.

ConsGeographic selection is sometimes not your choosing. Not everyone who out ranks you is smarter than you and there's not much you can do about that.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrust those under your charge. Allow them to take risks without fear of career-ending consequence.

ConsMust be flexible and ready for worldwide assignment.
