I worked at US Coast Guard full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Health benefits are great! Overall it is a great place to work, but hard to promote because of budget cuts.

    Cons

Leadership that was promoted wasn't always the best. Moving every couple of years is hard and no real career path for officers.

Long work days sometimes. Sometimes home life is sacrificed for work life. Unless you make the next rank, no bonuses or pay increases.

I have been working at US Coast Guard full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Unbeatable benefits, best work-life balance, discounts on any military base, great advancement opportunities, junior personnel empowered, given a lot of responsibility, humanitarian service with a humanitarian mission

    Cons

Members transfer every 4 years, long hours as a SAR Controller. Operations Specialist can't attend classes at night the way other rates can because of the 12-hr work schedules - also be expected to shift work.

I have been working at US Coast Guard full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

This company offers excellent benefits for just a few years of your time. Sure you might feel like you're in a daycare center on water, but just embrace it! What other job in the civilian world can you go to work, screw around all day, play video games, BS with friends, drink yourself to death in every port, chase drug runners and occasionally save a life? The organization is run mostly by kids in their early 20's. The higher ups are only in their 30's, so just imagine the kind of playground it turns into when you go out to sea. When you get back in port, it's even better. You get "trop" hours. This means go to work around 7, workout until 8 or 830 depending on the command. Then you drink coffee and BS till lunch. Try to accomplish one or two things to look useful. And then after lunch, sweep up for about a half hour and your off!! All you have to do is stay alive, pass a few tests here and there, and stay out of "trouble", and within your career you can be a highly paid Chief, Captain, or even the Commandant making over 10 grand a month in just base pay. Not counting all the other perks!
I did this for a few years and now I'm getting paid to go to college full time! You can't find benefits like this in ANY civilian job. Why did I leave??? Look at the Cons below.

    Cons

You are forced to travel. If you want to settle down in one spot, forget it. If your spouse has a career, forget it. If you're kids have friends in school, forget it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You could keep a more professional, responsible, and settled kind of crew if you simply offered stability. This simple uncertainty causes many good people to leave.
