I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and decent amount of predictibality. Deployments are tough on families, but DoD is increasing training focused on resiliency for families.

    Cons

Deployments and time away from family is tough. Over emphasis on time in service vice the best person for the job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to reduce promotion rates in order to retain only the most qualified. Determine additional incentives to increase competition amongst service members.

I have been working at US Department of Defense

    Pros

Get to work with many dedicated people. Often, lot of leeway given for longer lunch periods for physical exercise. Opportunity to work on different projects.

    Cons

Lack of long term strategy. Frequent change in military leadership, often translating in to frequent change in organizational structure and direction. A lot of waste.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be afraid to apply financial discipline. Think as a tax payer. Develop long term strategy. Hire more wisely. Learn to work together.

I worked at US Department of Defense full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Some great people; smart, hard-working, easy to get along with. You get to work on military bases and contribute to defending the country. Great construction projects to work on, and usually good contractors. Work-life balance is great. You get 2 to 4 weeks off per year, and no one gives you a hard time about taking it. There are some great supervisors and managers. If you can handle the cons, it's a secure job with great pay and benefits (medical, dental, 401k).

    Cons

If you are a white, male, licensed engineer - you're golden. If you are female and/or just a tech - you don't get much respect. There's little to no opportunity for advancement: there is one rank/pay grade for engineers and one for techs. You come in at that level and there's nowhere to go. Navy officers command (manage) every branch (with civilian engineers as managers. There's a strong military 'chain-of-command' element which means info flows down well, but not up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out to the field offices more often, and talk regularly with people at all levels. They need training, support, and communication. Hire experienced techs and engineers to be contract specialists so they understand the projects, technology, and lingo. Try harder to bring the climate for women up to the times.
