I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Ability to contribute to National Security and work on leading edge technology challenges. Stability of working for the government (most of the time)

    Cons

Classic challenges of working in a big company. The HR system is not designed to move fast. Sequestration.

    Advice to Management

People are the most important asset the DoD has.

    Pros

After the initial adjustment period, the work is predictable, which is what I prefer being someone with other life goals.

    Cons

Lack of innovation. The senior folks tend to not want to change anything because it's the "way they've always done it"

    Advice to Management

Listen to the younger up and coming employees.

    Pros

The pros are camaraderie and serving in the Armed forces of the United States of America. The ability to protect our standards and our way of life.

    Cons

The cons are the pay that is not comparible to the civilians who do the same jobs. Being away from loved ones is also a con.

    Advice to Management

    Increase pay.

    Pros

Enjoy working on the subject matter (country security and stability), the benefits of working a fairly predictable schedule, and meeting a bunch of good people

    Cons

It is a beauracracy and I sometimes find it hard to see my impact on DoD policy

    Advice to Management

Look to see how to enable your lower work force to laterally move to other jobs and reward their efforts and desires to grow and further develop themselves.

    Pros

This job a lows for very flexible hours. It pays well for the amount of work involved and includeds travel pay.

    Cons

The job description is neither full time nor part time and is considered as needed. There are no guaranteed hours nor set schedule and no benefits.

    Advice to Management

Comunication and organization are key and are not always up to par. I recommend better training and a better process for eliminating new hires that are not meeting training requirements.
