I worked at US Department of Labor as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

When I actually did have work, it was semi-interesting and insightful into how the government works. I learned a lot but am having trouble transfering what i learned to a new job.

    Cons

I worked on different types of employment based visas between two different cities. It was the most mismanaged and tense offices I ever worked in. I couldn't have my opinions and expertise count for any less by management. There are way way too many levels of management making one bad decision after another. Workflow was irregular and I would go days without anything to do. I had my salary cut in half twice. I went through three different rounds of layoffs. I was laid off twice. Once, where they had another position for me in a different city at half the pay. And then, I was finally let go for good two months ago.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get it together. The bickering in the office is counter productive. Treat your employees with some respect, contract and federal. Quit changing how you want things done every five minutes. Quit wasting taxpayer dollars by having such inefficient and uncoherent and outdated ways of doing things. Fire employees that do nothing. Promote people that do good work not people who are your cousins. Listen to employees' opinions. Quit pushing the contractors around. Don't hire people and fire them a week later through no fault of their own. Don't move people to a different city and fire them 8 months later without any notice. Really, I could go on but I would be beating a dead horse. it was unacceptably bad. This is not a rant, this is what actually happened.

I have been working at US Department of Labor full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The leave is very generous and stability is very stable.

    Cons

The managers have no training. They have no concept of how to deal with people. A lot of the management folks are wanna be cops.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide basic training on EEO and discrimination. The good ole boy shop does not have to exist. There is something other than work - a basic homelife.

I worked at US Department of Labor full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Only basic research performed with little real opportunity to perform serious research.

    Cons

Poor choice for researchers, as much of real research is farmed out to private companies. No opportunity to have research published or even reviewed properly by peers. Low level research being performed there by Economics staff. Don't waste your time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase the ability of senior staff to provide good management guidance and a quality research manager to head the Economic Group. As there is no real opportunity for research to be performed at a higher level, there is no upward ability to create meaningful research. Seems that management is only interested in simple number crunching of already performed research or surveys done in private sector. All research is obtained from private firms.

I have been working at US Department of Labor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

If you're any kind of minority wit a degree of any kind and know how to play 'the game' you'll go far. White male? Psh! Good luck!

    Cons

Do you enjoy doing the absolute minimum and still collecting a paycheck? Do you want a supervisor that expects you to only do what you're told, and nothing when you haven't been told to do something? Do you enjoy being evaluated arbitrarily regardless if you have shown evidence that you've exceeded what is required of you and have letters of commendation that are not included as part of your evaluation? If so, the Dept. of Labor is the place for you!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They're old. They like to promote minorities to make themselves look better despite whether or not the person can actually perform the required duties. Its kind of a running joke at this point.

I worked at US Department of Labor part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The training was good. Part time, flexible schedule. Gathering prices in stores and restaurants was easy. I was able to do it in chunks around my schedule. I was the perfect job for a mom, work while the kids are in school, then be home with them.

    Cons

Manager was unconcerned about safety, sent me door to door in the getto to price rental housing. I quit the job because I was in fear of my life. I would imagine there is less of that now that Zillow and other companies have that data, but it was really scary to be sent door to door in Compton and Watts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Use crime data, don't send employees to unsafe areas.
