    About What I Expected

    Correspondence Management Assistant (Current Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsAs a federal job, it has probably been easier to transition into it from the military. It is easy to pick up the job tasks.

ConsThe work does not require much from the employee. The focus is on time physically in office versus actual work put in. The pay appears to be less than the national average for the work performed. Inherently, there is no room for advancement.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Good experience as a student intern

    Intern (Current Employee)
    Oklahoma City, OK

ProsAs a student intern they let me choose my own schedule. I worked with the budgets and loved my work until I did it so fast that I had nothing to do.

ConsLeadership has problems. Nothing ever gets done by the deadline. Several unneccessary meetings. Small company that no one outside the company is familiar with. Very slow paced.

    Frustrating, but personally satisfying work.

    Talent Development Officer (Current Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsIf you are resilient to too many political appointees, fifedoms, and overall ineffective government bureacracy, you will do well here. They have (in most areas) great work-life balance like telework, flexible work, and all. The senior leadership is pretty nice, but there are typically a lot of levels in between.

ConsPoor first-line supervision, disengaged employees, unmotivated learning and development attitude, and an overall lack of strategic planning at the middle levels.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest more in your people. Try to avoid having money go directly to the program offices without skimming funds for the agency (OST) to use for training and development. Trust me, you need it.

Cool work, crazy hours, bad managers

    GS11 (Former Employee)
    Cambridge, MA

    Pros*The projects are very interesting
*The non-management people are brilliant and fun
    *Transportation issues are important
*Location is good - near the subway, Esplanade, MIT
*Hours are very flexible - core hours are 10am to 3pm.

Cons*Management is capricious, ignorant, and inefficient
    *Paperwork can be tedious
    *Pay is relatively low
    *The benefits are poor
    *Building is old
    *Everyone shares offices

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't take your stress out on your workers. Overworking everyone is not a sustainable business model.

Plan on making at least 125K to have a safe, civil life in DC.

    Cartographer (Current Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsFlex schedule & doing work that matters.

ConsIt is easy to reach you peak grade level and have no upward place to go. Unless you grew up here and don't know better it's a horrible region to live with no quality of life. There is no place good to live. If you live close in plan on being a victim of crime. Come to DC area and take a good look around before you take a job. Go to the grocery store in the community you plan to live to get a vibe. If you want to live someplace civil and plan on commuting a long way. In this town it seems the government gives everybody the same quality of life you work for.

    Advice to Senior ManagementNone.
