I have been working at US Department of Transportation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Like all government jobs, the usual perks are (normally) stability, good health benefits, and a good retirement investment opportunity (the Thrift Savings Plan). My co-workers are wonderful, we have an important mission which really helps too. Promotion potential is pretty good up to a point.

    Cons

The main challenge, again like all government jobs, is Congress waging war on federal workers by freezing our pay for three years. This has resulted in a major loss of buying power in a very expensive place to live.

    Advice to Management

The hiring of supervisory positions is often based on favoritism. A large portion of supervisors are very bad managers, they are technical people that were promoted beyond their abilities.

I have been working at US Department of Transportation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

DOT is a regulatory agency, most people are experts in their field - even the politicals have several years of experience in the field. You can tell most people love their job & genuinely want to make a difference.

    Cons

Promotional Opportunity is a challenge because minus the politicals for most of the senior leadership this is their career.

    Pros

The best part of my job are my fellow co-workers. Everyone her comes in and gives an honest days work for an honest days pay. The pay for what I do is good.

    Cons

Limited opportunity for advancement within my geographic location, there are plenty opportunities but I would have to up root my family and move away from home.

    Advice to Management

Removing the FV Pay Band and returning us to the GS Pay Band.

I worked at US Department of Transportation full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible work schedules, good salaries, telework opportunities

    Cons

Very few opportunities to move from clerical to analyst positions,

    Advice to Management

Have an audit of actual duties vs. job descriptions to us as a tool for setting grade levels. Many of clerical positions still at GS-5/6 probably need to be at higher levels due to work assignments and vice versa for some mid-management positions.

I worked at US Department of Transportation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Many opportunities for employees, ability to move between departments (if you really want to and bring it up) good benefits and time off, good mentors, great culture.

    Cons

Sometimes the pace of the work can be a little slow. I would be really bored for a couple of days and have nothing to do and then other days I would be relatively busy.

    Advice to Management

No advice, my manager and coworkers were great!

I worked at US Department of Transportation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people, the location and the benefits made working at DOT a good place. Commuting benefits were also very good. Location on the metro and bus lines made getting to work much easier.

    Cons

It is difficult to get promoted into the SES core as there are many qualified candidates and not enough positions. Best chance for promotions seems to be minorities or people with several degrees.
