I worked at US Navy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very challenging job with ever changing financial environment. The workers are very friendly and always go out of their way to make even the difficult periods pleasant.

    Cons

Currently preparing for a audit. This is the first time for these and the accounting section is undermanned to perform all the tasks required.

    Pros

Solid benefits package. Good upward progression if you have the head for it. Foreign ports are really good if you don't spend the whole time in the bar.

    Cons

Often have no clue what you're doing. A lot of time standing around "just in case something happens." A lot of time away from family.

    Advice to Management

Remember that your people are people. Keep an eye out for talent and use it. Don't write-off someone who is not working out, but rather try to develop them into a functional team member.

    Pros

Personal development, leadership potential, educational incentives, travel opportunities, fantastic peer groups

    Cons

Bureaucracy, family life, micromanagement, and a narrow "golden path" to advancement that devalues variations from the common career pipeline

    Advice to Management

Implement a 360 review similar to that used by the Army. There are an unhealthy amount of toxic leaders within the Navy, especially within the blue water Navy.

    Pros

Work-life balance is great once you get used to the rhythm of deployment rotation. The sea-shore rotation of linguists is a bit different than other jobs. You spend more of your time on shore, or deploying. Bonus pay is good, if you can keep your annual language test scores up. The Navy experience is well known for its travel, and its careers are as rewarding as they are difficult.

    Cons

Regimented career path. Few duty stations open to you. Little time at sea also means fewer experiences shared with your shipmates, less time to study for sea-specific insignia (Surface/Subsurface Warfare Specialist pins). Like the rest of the military, you'll usually find yourself being micromanaged throughout your day. Your coworkers are also usually fairly intelligent which is a pro, but the field has its large share of oddballs!

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

Challenging environment with good opportunity for rapid advancement. Leadership roles can be assumed within a year. Training is valuable for post navy career.

    Cons

90+ hour weeks for five years straight. Deployments involve extended time away from and very limited communication with friends and family. Nuclear work is very bureaucratic and much time is wasted just getting set up for a days work.

    Pros

Great Pay and Benefits Opportunity to see the world Top notch training Great Opportunity to advance Great Education Benefits High quality of co-workers and supervisors (for the most part)

    Cons

Long working hours Multiple relocations Long Deployments often without communications to the outside world Lots of rules and regulations Hazardous working environment confined spaces No personal time or space when underway

    Advice to Management

Value your subordinates personal time, it is what they value the most. Make standards realistic and reasonable to up hold. Evaluate manning and workload and ensure they are realistic to get the job done without breaking someone or tempting them to give up their integrity.

    Pros

Full time employment, great pay and benefits, the skill and training that I have received while serving in the Navy will benefit me the rest of my life both in the work force and family life. I'll never find a job where I get to travel the world and get paid to see new places.

    Cons

There are days with very long working hours and the underway eat into your family and personal life so much that it is hard to do anything other then think about work even when you are at home. There is always that potential to be called in at anytime of the day.

    Advice to Management

really I can't since all of the policies are made outside my control.
