Former Employee - Account Director in New York, NY

I worked at USA Today full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Nice environment with nice people. No crazy sales people (rare for NYC). Great product and excellent pay

    Cons

Disconnect between marketing and their ideas for special pro gams to sell to clients. The presentations were too complicated and convoluted. Low energy and passion for the product.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Drill down the point of difference and communicate this more effectively with the sales team. Raise the passion factor more and eliminate all the stupid programs that marketing would present to the sales people to sell.

  3. Good company and brand with good work/life balance

I have been working at USA Today full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Hours are very good with flexibility to work from home. People are great. If you stay focused on the job there is a lot to learn as well as what others are going.

    Cons

Recent layoffs and reorg has left a lot of people unsure about the future. A lot of overlap and redundancy in the sale group. AEs don't necessarily understand what they are selling or can articulate to clients. They rely heavily on marketing and sales support to hand things on a silver platter.

I have been working at USA Today full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The people are great! Very easy to get along with, helpful and great teachers. Hours are not too crazy as long as you get your work done. Great place to focus on yourself since the work is not brutal like ad agencies. Plus they have a gym, a nice "campus," decent food, and other perks. It's a great, fresh brand to work with for a company being located in the DC area.

    Cons

There's never any budget to do anything cool with USA TODAY's marketing. You really have to rely on stock photography or your own photography. The company's future is uncertain since it has made a couple of bold moves lately.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Everything pertaining to the creative should be handled by the Creative Director, not by the other higher ups. The other higher ups should be more focused on the strategy and making sure the campaign is on the right direction.

I worked at USA Today as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

I was a temporary employee at the McLean location and felt like I had a good experience. Based on my experience at other employers, USA Today treats their temporary employees very fairly in terms of pay.

    Cons

I did not like the fact that you were forced to take an hour lunch; a half hour is more than enough for me so that felt like wasted time in my day.

    Pros

Good co-workers, my dept had good team environment, autonomy, nice work/life balance, it was great to work on a well known brand

    Cons

Declining industry, tough economy for newspapers, strategy kept changing, very numbers driven, work/team experience varies widely depending on what dept. you work in.

    Pros

A fast-paced environment with daily challenges and successes.

    Cons

A declining industry and today's management tends to view everything through a spreadsheet.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend less time looking at spreadsheets and more time talking to your people.

I worked at USA Today as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Meaningful work for the interns, treated as valued member of collective creative team. Great location and building for the DC Metro Area. Food is good and gym in the office is nice.

    Cons

Sometimes work is less than glamorous but that comes with the internship territory. Sometimes projects can drag on for a bit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't let the USAT brand stagnate back into what it was before the rebrand, keep pushing.
