I worked at USDA Rural Development as an intern

Friendly and relaxed work environment. Workers genuinely engaged and passionate about the agency and the work they do.

    Cons

The slowness of communication in the chain of command due to the amount of bureaucracy.

I worked at USDA Rural Development full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I worked in the federal govt civil service for 20 years-half of which was with USDA. It is a good place to work if you are able to manage your own priorities and think independently. Supervision is not always available or particularly helpful. Benefits are great, health insurance is one of the best, but you do pay for it.

    Cons

Being part of such a large organization usually means you won't have much influence. Sometimes you just have to 'go with the flow' Civil service is very conservative and there is a lot of 'but we always do it that way' adverse to change!

    Advice to Management

Look more carefully at who you promote to supervision. Be open to new ideas.

    Pros

Work life balance is excellent. Flexible work schedules.

    Cons

Slow to adapt. IT is five years behind the private sector.

    Pros

All things renewable energy comes out of Rural America so this was a phenomenal learning resource with respect to the many new technologies coming out. Very friendly office.

    Cons

Could be slow on occasion. Had to seek out additional projects to keep busy.

    Advice to Management

Government hiring bureaucracy is terrible. Less hierarchy and more meritocracy.
