    Cashier/tasker

Part-Time Cashier (Current Employee) El Paso, TX

ProsManagers give you a flexible work schedule to accommodate with school etc. You get a 25% discount in the store and 50% at the salon. The tasks given to you are simple job-entry type. You get to have a first look at new products on the market.

ConsThey start you at a quarter above minimum wage. They give you minuscule yearly raises. They hardly have any hours to give to part time employees. If you are not in prestige, you do not get any proper training on makeup so you are basically useless to customers questions.

    Great opportunity for growth

Associate Manager (Current Employee) Phoenix, AZ

ProsI was promoted up the chain from a cashier to an associate manager of people in less than a year. (4 promotions) and I plan to continue to the corporate level. I really enjoy everything I have learned about the business and being a manager has prepared me for future difficult situations that I may face. The entire staff works together to help make budget and goals.

ConsSometimes the goals that the company sets for individual stores are not realistic to what we actually end up doing. I don't have a very good work/life balance because I'm always at work.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake suggestions for improvement into consideration. There will always be areas to become stronger as a company, and employees feel included and respected when their thoughts are heard.

Growing along with a growing company

Prestige Manager (Current Employee) Columbia, MO

ProsI have been the Prestige Manager at my local store for 3 years now and I LOVE it! Great vendor support and guests that come in looking for me are a constant plus. I love learning about the new products and the seasonal launches constantly give you something to look forward to. The events are so much fun! I keep a running list of clients who like certain products so the planning is not hard but the actual events are the best! Gratis is fun and the discount is great-especially the additional discount we get during the holidays! Our General Manager lets me run my department and trusts my decisions, but is always there for support if I need her input. My hourly + my bonus is great (I had 30 years in the beauty/retail field) and the benefits once I went full time (after my store exceeded its goal and warranted more hours) are AMAZING! Great company-I could advance if I wanted to relocate-but I am totally content doing what I do!

ConsSome of the biggest challenges are the part-time employees (almost all college students) who don't have any work ethic. The spend more time grumbling about doing a task , than it would take to do it. They think they should get paid to just show up, and don't understand the concept of cleaning, stocking or any number of the things that make up a job in retail. And forget about trying to get them to approach a guest or suggest any additional products or trying to "upsell". They think they want to work in a "makeup store" until they discover that we actually expect them to work and not just play in the makeup.

Advice to Senior ManagementOne of my biggest concerns is the amount of external theft that goes on in a single day. When you only have enough allotted hours to schedule two employees to work a shift, that just doesn't leave anyone to do LP. I would suggest that you give great thought to locking up the fragrance behind plexi and some of the higher shrink items like the Naked palettes.

    Co-Manager (Current Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsFree products and good work environment

ConsOutdated systems and doesn't allow store management any control of inventory.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet your store management have more control of the merchandise flow.

I have a bitter sweet experience at Ulta as I was making more money in one location than I am when I took a transfer.

Hairstylst (Current Employee) Des Moines, IA

ProsAs an employee you save 25% on product you buy for yourself. The prices are high enough that you can make a descent commission in the salon. I like the part-time hours where you can change them as you need to. The tips are great!!

ConsNeed a better plan for advancement. The path to Abundance program is not good if the business is not there and you can't make the numbers you need to make to get promoted.

Advice to Senior ManagementChange the program for the level jumping. There has to be a better way to get promoted. Can people with degrees bypass the level system by applying for a job in corporate?

Great if your goal is the Beauty Industry

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsEasy, Good discount, when the managers are good they are GOOD.

ConsShould hire fro within instead of without first. GM's should have to take a course in at least color matching. Lack of hours of course, but that's always a given

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure that your GM's aren't taking all the credit for the work being done and don't freak out about customer surveys.

not a lot of money, but a lot of drama.

    Beauty Advisor (Current Employee)

ProsGet to work a lot of hours. sometimes. Have been trained in multiple parts of the store. got a promotion within 6 months.

ConsLack of hours. Look bad to customers because not enough time for anyone int he store to get stuff done. Horrible management. Corporate does not seem to be much better. not enough par for the multiple positions being covered. inconsistent hours. shifts cut a lot. unprofessional management.

Advice to Senior ManagementFigure out how to get enough hours so something actually gets done. put people on shipment who know where things go and work fast enough to get the stock out. Train people better, don't just throw them on the register and expect them to be okay. Take iniative to train the employees based on NPS scores - not just rubbing it in their face when there are bad review left. have a manager on the floor, not just in the back all day.

Fun to work. Poor hours no promotion offered

Lead Cashier (Current Employee) Orlando, FL

ProsFun to work with when you have a good team. Good dress code. Get to put on makeup everyday

    ConsNO HOURS BIGGEST PROBLEM
they hire managers from outside the company
You cant do makeup on people. There is usually one person on the floor consumed at the register.
IT IS RETAIL dont expect to delve into cosmetics even if you are in prestige. Customers complain that they cant get help. The company is going to flop if they keep running like this

Advice to Senior ManagementGive hours to the store. Shrink is high if we had more people on the floor it would compensate. Its ridiculous how big the store is and nothing can get done because two people run the store all day.

    – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
